in their tunes you can hear dust, desert highways,
and skateboards gliding over
suburbia. The Donkeys have San Diego, and from tha
t environment have woven a
fundamental ease in their music - a rock, a roll, a
sway, a slide - you could even call it
a breeze. On

vibrations

but add a mystery and tension that make this recor
d their most lyrically
and instrumentally compelling.
Ride the Black Wave
embodies what Jack Kerouac described of California
’s coast as
having an “end of the land sadness.” The Donkeys st
are out at the ocean in a
“fantastic drowse” - a kind of pensiveness towards
their environs that summons the
elements of sound and style that belong only to the
m. In “Blues In The Afternoon”,
a collective mantra, the band runs out of land and
asks of the ocean to offer
suggestions about their fate. It is songs like the
se that prove the Donkeys are a band
in the true sense of the word, sharing each other’s
worry and wonder. With

The Donkeys have further caged their craft and have
accomplished the delicate and
artful challenge of taming the captured, while also
letting it be wild.
Recorded at San Diego’s Singing Serpent and mixed b
y LA’s Thom Monahan, the
Telecasters have a golden shimmer, the drums seem t
o echo with a regional
reverberation. The notes coming off the Rhodes flo
at on like beer-buzzed
afternoons, but just when you get lost in the hypno
tic swirl of “Sunny Daze” the
churning guitars begin to circle like sharks, remin
ding us of the realities beneath all

Classic appears like the mythic Calafia herself, de
livering a vocal that would bring
Cortez to his knees.
So, it is with
Ride the Black Wave
that The Donkeys add their own stratum to
California’s ever expanding musical frontier, while
maintaining their golden “shine”
as well as interjecting a tension with the sun and
beauty. The record hypnotizes as
much as it awakens; it poetically puts us at ease w
hile we sit in traffic, peck at our
keyboards in cubicles, or conversely, it accompanie
s us as we ride along desert
highways, or sway with our lovers. It is about hom
e; it is about waves, and
surrendering to their movements, trusting that they
will take us to where we truly
belong.

Of the new record, Eric says:

In January of 2014 I decided to sit down and write an album’s worth of songs all over the course of a few weeks, which is something I had never done before.

Some were done at home during an unseasonably cold Portland winter, some in Boonville, California (a town in the wine-and-weed producing part of Mendocino County where they also have their own language,’Boontling’), and some in Joshua Tree, a place where people have always sought inspiration.

It had always taken a long time for me to write songs – and when one would finally come to me I’d put some broad concepts down on paper, find a nice melody, and then let the listener decide what they might be hearing.

Well, these new songs all mean something, from my life and from my brain. Even the lines that may be somewhat enigmatic or metaphorical sounding to you directly correlate to my life, and maybe yours, too.

The puzzle of existence on “Minor Miracles.” Rebuilding a life in “West County Girl” and “Lose It All, All the Time.” A quite literal story in “For The Boy Who Moved Away” about moving away from L.A. to an uncertain future, the San Gabriel Mountains engulfed in flames in our rearview.

And that’s to name but a few.

These are not the “happy” songs that I’ve come to be associated with – no fully major chords, and lots of suspended chords and major sevenths to make things kind of emotionally ambiguous. There was no stylistic dogma in making this record, and I was ready to fold in every type of music I was into at the moment – Joni Mitchell, new age, early 80′s McCartney, Another Green World, film scores, Talk Talk, British folk, and modern stuff that’s got me excited.

I had a bunch of my favorite people come and join me on this. Sam Cohen, Brian Kantor, and Josh Kaufman (all of Yellowbirds and a million other bands) made up the backbone of the band in the early part of the tracking. And then there were appearances by people from all the different chapters of my musical life – Andy Cabic from Vetiver and Tim Rutili from Califone dropped by to add stuff. James Mercer from The Shins sang some gorgeous high harmonies, and Nathan Larson of Shudder to Think (also my sometime film score collaborator) laid down some drone-y guitar vibes. And of course Thom Monahan, my usual studio co-conspirator, was there to make everything
come together.

These are simple stories, some about losses, a few about disappointment and regret, but also of hope and perseverance. I hope you like these melancholy grooves and existential make-out songs. These all mean something to me, I hope they will to you, too.

EDJ - For The Boy Who Moved Away

‘Running For You’ ties together Moloney's punchy and distinctive back beats - a trademark of his work as a producer - with layers of guitar, vocals and catchy lyrical work.

Lyall Moloney has found the perfect groove combo between electronica/hip-hop and floaty, sub-aquatic guitars, gnawing his way through musical genres like a rabbit on a carrot. Beats, synths and sample techniques of the 90s R&B vibe. His production is slick. Songs like this are a rarity and begs to be played and re-played. Something nostalgically fresh and charming.

The musical grind between Sharouny and Moloney on 'Running For You' is a gift. A melodically sweet calling up of the best of the current electro crop and older school soul artists. It's one of many like-minded collaborations from 'Only Lonely' (Moloney's forthcoming album).

'Only Lonely' is an album made up of features and collaborations (including Moktar and Diz Frost from Sticky Fingers) - coming out through MGM in April this year.

Blue Heart

Dirty eight piece beatnik indie garage with jazz and soul influences. Rock n' Roll Graveyard is their first single to be released on Friday 14 October. Written by Darcy McNulty and arranged by Jazz Party. Produced by Steven Schram, it is their first collaboration since they worked together with Clairy Browne and the Bangin Rackettes. (Darcy wrote the bands break through song "Love Letter".) Rock n' Roll Graveyard was recorded with the full eight piece band live at Soundpark studios in North Fitzroy.

The song is about nostalgia, death, jealousy and love. It was inspired by old American gospel groups.
