Zeds Dead - Adrenaline

Minneapolis, Minnesota’s James Ristvedt has burst onto the scene in a big way. Producing a wide swath of tracks that defy conventional categorization, Alpha Data (facebook.com/alphadata | soundcloud.com/alphadata) has found himself thrust into the spotlight through a series of well-timed, well-received remixes and original tracks, as well as feature spots on bills with Conspirator. Ristvedt brings to the table an incredibly melodic flavor of music, which is lacking in much of today’s EDM scene. He has been creating uplifting groovy songs for a few years now, and continues to develop his unique and potent sound. Alpha Data is backed by the future bass music label GruntWorhty, which features other prominent artists like +Verb, Minnesota, Stephan Jacobs, and Sugarpill. James is managed by scene veteran Marc Brownstein, bassist for The Disco Biscuits and the aforementioned Conspirator. The AD EP Nefertiti was released in November, and quickly climbed its way up the Beatport glitch-hop charts. It features emphatic bass tones mixed with glitched out Egyptian soundscapes, which together combine to create an incredibly solid release.

His latest burst of creative energy has resulted in a massive bundle of exclusive tracks for TheUntz.com. The release features an Alpha Data original, an ambitious reworking, and a bevy of remixes of his breakout “Nefertiti” by vanguards in the glitch ethos.

“I Enter You Enter I,” and is easily one of the most imaginative tracks Alpha Data has dropped to date. It is the perfect way to open up the EP: immersive melodic synths that quickly entrance the listener. As the song progresses, we are introduced to eerie vocal samples, spoken words, and sparkling, precise drum tones. The cut retains Alpha Data’s unique Egyptian sound that fits so well with his glitch-hop and hyphy production. The song is an almost 7-minute journey that is as calming as it is groovy, and features powerful builds ups that each drop in their own unique way.

The next five cuts are the exclusive remixes of Alpha Data’s dynamic track, “Neferiti,” and are all a must hear. The remixes are contributed by old hands and newcomers alike. Samples (soundcloud.com/BenSamples), Sovereign Sect (soundcloud.com/sovreign-sect), J.me.j (soundcloud.com/jmejdj), Unlimited Gravity (soundcloud.com/unlimitedgravity), and Burn Brighter (soundcloud.com/burnbrighter), each put their own original twist on the song. They keep the guitar samples and Egyptian feel that make the original so great, but each put their own emphatic glitch-hop feel on the song. As expected, the Samples remix is down and dirty, big bass wallops shattering synth runs. The Burn Brighter redo matches midtempo wobbles with a melodic bit-crushed rehashing reminiscent of the Sega classic Sonic Pinball. Possibly the most surprising remix is J.me.j’s, which veers from the familiar bounce and takes the track into the off-kilter world of Bhangra. Quite inventive, to say the least.

The closing cut, “Razors Anthem,” is a remix of up-and-comer Paractazor (soundcloud.com/paractazor). While the other tracks are united in Eastern melodies, this track features bright classical guitar that hearkens back to the Renaissance and traveling minstrels in ill-fitting tights. Hip-hop samples along with lines from Family Guy flesh out this schizophrenic journey through tempos and time signatures.

There’s no telling where the trends and various flavors of the day will take the electronic music scene. However, with this dramatic display of talent and flair, young Mr. Ristvedt is staking his claim in a dynamic new corner of the market. Long live Alpha Data.

Zeds Dead have just released their brand new 5 song "Hot Sauce" EP via Diplo’s Mad Decent.The follow-up to last year’s Mad Decent EP, Victor, features 5 instrumental tracks that find the duo exploring more sonic territory with their music, further proving that they are one of the most versatile electronic groups around. From the opener, “Demons”, a nightmare inducing track with heavy, pulsating synths as well as keys and strings plucked straight from classic horror films to “Mr. Sub”, which displays a more minimalist approach from the duo with a bouncing bass and touches of space-disco synths and “Rave” a breakbeat monster that hits so fast they put in an audible breaths to remind listeners to take one themselves.
