Triumphant Return

"I remember that day clearly.  We heard the distant drums keeping pace as the warriors marched, and we knew in a instant that they had returned.  Every man, woman and child dropped what they were doing and gathered at the edge of town.  The beating of the drums grew louder, and as they rounded the hills we could hear the warriors burst into song.

"We are here!
We are home!"

Never since have I felt such power and elation from so few words.  The townsfolk cheered and waved with such emotion that they could scarcely contain themselves, and the children were so overpowered by their emotions that they ran out of town to meet the victorious warriors half way.  Like a wave of barbarian warriors attacking our brave men, the boys leaped into the arms of their fathers.  It took nearly half an hour for the men to appease the joyful throng of children and to herd the joyful mob out of the field and finally enter the city.  The warriors had returned triumphant.  

Once inside the city walls the army was surrounded by their families and friends, and all around I could see not a single dry eye.   Everyone feared that they would never see our warriors again, so when certain disaster had turned into such overwhelming success the tears of sorrow that could have been were, on this day, nothing compared to the tears of joy and exuberance."

Triumphant Return

On the third day of battle, the reinforcements finally arrived.  For two days the men fought bitterly to repel the invaders.  The losses were too great and there were many dead who were stacked in piles for lack of place to bury them.  The wounded moaned in a constant and inescapable drone that felt like drowning men dragging us to the depths of despair.  And there was a heavy pall of smoke that lay about our small castle like a blanket of gloom that covered the men's spirits.   While the enemy had withdrawn back to their camp beside the river, our reinforcements arrived like a ray of sunshine piercing through a foggy day and brought rousing cheers from the men as they poured in through the gate.  By the cheers, one would have thought the battle over and victory ours.  This was the effect of the reinforcements upon our spirits that day.   The battle was not over, but our defeated hearts were raised up in renewed enthusiasm for what must assuredly be a certain victory.

Strolling Down Dream Street

Reflections

The air was thick with the fog of the morning and the palpable dread of our soldiers as we began to see the formations of the enemy in the dawn’s early light.  The fog gave way to rain and then it began.  The relentless pounding of the trebuchet crashed into the castle walls with a fiery anger that made physical the hateful bloodlust of the screams of our enemy.  Each wall-shaking explosion was echoed by the thunderous yells of the enemy who would soon descend upon us in a stormy wave of murderous hatred.
