After the festivities of Seattle Halloween, which was mostly 70’s Disco music and 1200 trick or treaters, I came home and started listening to slower moody Fall music, but as it happens the entities tricked me into going into Drum & Bass territory. An eclectic ride until I made myself go to sleep. I blame too much candy sugar and the wine.

Feel Good Winter Solstice Part 2

My friend Bruce makes a themed playlist each year.  2025 is "Hearts". Here is a mix for him.

Break Your Heart – Natalie Merchant
From 1998 album Ophelia (a reference to the Shakespeare character). She invited many musicians to her home studio in upstate NY, and this track features Chris Botti (trumpet), N’Dea Davenport (backup vocals), and a string ensemble. The album’s arrangements are lusher than her previous album, Tigerlily. The song is not about a lover’s heartbreak, but about the trials of life, especially for the less privileged.

Empty Heart – The Rolling Stones
12 x 5, recorded in Chicago in 1964, is one of my favorite Stones albums. I love the raw, bluesy sound and the influence of Shreveport rocker Dale Hawkins and his 1957 song “Susie Q,” which they cover. Playing with Hawkins was James Burton, then 17, and an idol of Keith Richards. “Empty Heart” sounds like a blues classic, but was a group effort by the Stones and others in the studio. It’s about having an empty heart after your lover leaves.

Give Back My Heart – Lyle Lovett
Pontiac (1988) was Lovett’s second album. Randy Lewis of the LA Times wrote that Lovett is a “stunningly perceptive and ingenious songwriter.” 

From the Heart Down – The Pretenders
From 1999 album ¡Viva El Amor!. With Chrissie Hynde’s unmistakable vocals and great band work, it’s a strong song. The album cover photo is by Linda McCartney.

Pain in My Heart – Otis Redding
Redding grew up in Macon, GA, playing the chitlin circuit. With this 1964 album, he reached both Black audiences and the broader public in the US and Europe. 

The Heart of Saturday Night – Tom Waits
Released in 1974, the title track was written as a tribute to Jack Kerouac.

Tell Your Heart I Love You – Stevie Wonder
From A Time to Love (2005), released after a ten-year hiatus. Motown was frustrated by the delay; Stevie said, “In time, God will give me what I need.” This is one of the album’s funkier love songs.

Wooden Heart – Elvis Presley
From G.I. Blues (1960), Elvis’ first album after military service. It was No. 1 on Billboard for 10 weeks. Written on Tin Pan Alley and based on a German folk song, Elvis sings verses in German—with a Mississippi accent.

The Heart’s a Lonely Hunter – Thievery Corporation
From The Cosmic Game (2005). Byrne said it’s more about the sound of words than meaning. Whether poignant or abstract, the blend of lyrics and downtempo electro-funk works well.

Have a Heart – Bonnie Raitt
After 20 years of modest success, Nick of Time (1989) revived Raitt’s career. “Have a Heart” was released as a single and pleads against the cruelty of keeping someone you don’t truly love.

Icy Blue Heart – John Hiatt
The opening line—“She came on to him like a slow movin’ cold front”—is often cited as one of the best. From Slow Turning, the album equaled or surpassed Bring the Family. Supporting musicians include Sonny Landreth, Bernie Leadon, and John Hooker.

Nothing But Heartaches – The Supremes
Diana Ross joined the Supremes at 15. They went on to score 12 No. 1 singles. The song tells of a man who gives his lover nothing but heartaches.

Unchain My Heart – John Scofield
An instrumental tribute to Ray Charles, produced by Steve Jordan. The song was famously recorded by Charles in 1961 and later by Joe Cocker.

Hearts and Bones – Paul Simon
The 1983 title track was meant for a Simon & Garfunkel reunion, but Simon kept it solo due to its personal nature, including songs about Carrie Fisher.

Shape of My Heart – Sting
From Ten Summoner’s Tales (1993), co-written with Dominic Miller, who plays the iconic guitar riff. The song is about a gambler seeking meaning, not money. It became a pop classic and appeared in Léon: The Professional.

Secret Heart – Feist
Written by Ron Sexsmith. On Let It Die (2004), Feist sings it softly, while a 2005 Paris concert performance shows a more impassioned version. The song is about emotional reserve and vulnerability.

Winter Sleeps & Dreams

I had to take another pass at this one and shift away from the attempted Brazil fusion and just go deeper into psychic transcendental flow. Amor Satyr is an interesting clash of trance meets beats via Brazilian French, so that's where the original Brazil vibe came from, but it just didn't gel  in the first eclectic round.
