The 41st release of katharsis is the EP “swansong” by jhl coming out on May 3rd. The New Zealand-based artist portray a dark and dramatic world of love and pain in this five-track release, drawing inspiration from poetry, opera, and fantasy worldbuilding. The result is both endearing and epic with its glittering synths, grandiose sound design, and poignant orchestral elements. jhl’s vocals carry big emotions through all five songs, as the lyrics are characterized by heartbreak and despair though still full of hope and love.

Aire - 'Opening Scene'

Spanish producer Aire presents his sophomore album Opening Scene. Since his 2018 debut on formative experimental grime label Glacial Sound, Aire has spent his time composing music for a wide range of national dance performances (Notably at the Teatros del Canal in Madrid and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (MACBA). Over this time he has vastly expanded his sonic palette, adding a plethora of live instrumentation into his raw and emotive sound into his personal work.

Thematically, Opening Scene explores the emotional depth of human connection; its cracks, failures and the resilience built from them. Through a fusion of classical and modern styles assisted by string performers Andrea Amador & Asia Jimenez & vocalist Sunny Graves, the album captures the vulnerable and tender relationships that give oneself stability.

Abîme co-founders Ytem and Chams unites for a split EP, Abîmés, composed of one solo track each and their first official collaboration, ‘VVM’. 

The latter subtly combines Ytem's cellos with the piano and vocals of Chams, all bound together by the industrial drums they share a common interest for.

The first track of the EP, Chams’ ‘Fou allié’, is at the same time a continuation and a rupture with his last release. As he continues to explore the vocal side of his music, he adopts a way more straightforward approach that makes ‘Fou allié’ what could be called an anthem, layering his performance on top of an emotional vocal sample.

On his solo track ‘Torsion’, Ytem is showcasing his ability to brilliantly arrange cellos, in a complex structure that somehow manages to appears fluid and consistent despite the constant evolution that the piece undergoes.
