In early 1985, the station was purchased by Sconnix Broadcasting, and on March 7 of that year, WCKO changed call letters to WMXJ-FM, changing the format to adult contemporary as "Majic 102", and upgraded their signal, moving the station to the master antenna system serving South Florida, the result of another station moving from 92.1 to 92.3. 
In 1986, the station migrated to a full-time 50s and 60s oldies format as "Majic 102.7", and was commercially successful in the 25-54 demographic through 1991.
In 1994, the station was sold to Jefferson-Pilot Communications.

KXXX flipped to oldies as KFRC-FM on March 18, 1991.
In January 1993, Alliance Broadcasting, a company run by former KYUU general manager John Hayes, bought KFRC. On August 12, 1993, KFRC-FM began simulcasting on 610 AM.
As KFRC-FM, 99.7 FM simulcast the oldies format of its well-known sister AM station. The oldies format proved successful in the Bay Area market, reaching number one with the 25-54-year-old demographic. 
In September 1995, Alliance was bought out by Infinity Broadcasting.

On March 28, 1994, KYA flipped to high-energy country music as "Young Country 93.3" and later changed its call sign to KYCY.
The station would add the -FM suffix in 1997, when the station began simulcasting on 1550 AM, and would later rebrand as "Y93" on February 22, 1999.

On August 4, 1986, at 7 am, Beasley flipped the station to a dance-leaning CHR format under the name "Power 96, Miami's fresh new music mix", with a change in call letters to WPOW.
It played mostly dance, pop, freestyle, R&B, hip hop, and a dose of rock-centric type hits that became mass appeal enough to incorporate into the playlist. 
The first song on "Power 96" was "Rumors" by Timex Social Club. 
"Power 96" embraced the regionally blossoming Miami Bass sound as well, mixing it into the playlist. 
The moniker "Power 96" was the idea of new owner and general manager Gregory Reed.
