A college friend (and fellow radio dork) Bill Michaels (half of the Dwyer & Michaels show on 97X in the Quad Cities) originally produced 'Pump Up the Casey' just for fun around 1989 from some old American Top 40 shows that the radio station we worked at together (101.9 WBNQ) played on the weekend.

I recently found the song on a dusty old cassette & was surprised to find that it still played! So after giving it a listen (& waxing nostalgic…no, that's NOT code) I decided to give it some new life. 

So I digitized it, (tried) to clean up the audio...and remixed it w/some of Casey's famous 'rants.' (Casey's rants were not available when the song was originally produced or I'm sure Bill would have used em'.)

With the popularity of FX’s “American Crime Story: The People v. O. J. Simpson,” I was reminded of a song parody I wrote & performed back in 1995 when I was at MIX 94.5 WLRW in Champaign, IL. 

I collaborated with a local Barbershop Quartet & our station's very talented 'Prod God' Doug Jean...and the 1-Hit Wonder group ".25¢ & The Tabloidz" was born. 

For better or worse, "the verdict" on October 3, 1995 was one of the biggest media events in history ...and a day later "OJ's Free" was on the air.

Our parody received a few weeks of local air-play in Central Illinois but our proudest moment was when "OJ's Free" had a spin on The Dr. Demento Show!

...as they say, “Everything old, is new again!”

101.5FM WBNQ Laughlin & Moss Morning Show Song 1991

Here's a lil' something I whipped-up one day waaaay back in the early 90's while working at 101.5FM WBNQ.

One afternoon I was working on a commercial and listening to some sound FX. Just as I stumbled across a track called 'Sea Lion sounds,' a fellow jock (Greg "The Gregger" Liestman) walked in the studio. 

As I recall, Greg stood in the studio doorway with a very perplexed look on his face because of the strange noises coming from the speakers. Without skipping a beat I said, "You know Greg...the Sea Lion Can Be Your Friend." ...and a bit of audio whimsy was born. 

Outside of "The Narrator's" parts, everything else was sampled at the time from random albums from the vast WJBC & WBNQ production and music libraries.

"The Sea Lion Can Be Your Friend" turned out to be a mini-novelty hit airing on WBNQ's Dance Party hosted by Aaron C., as well as getting some air on Jonathon Brandmeier's Showgram on 98.7WLUP & AM 1000 "The Loop." It also had a few spins on THE Dr. Demento Show.

Inspiration can come from the strangest of things...and for me, the stranger the better!
