Jimmy left us a year ago today, August 31st, 2021…

Three weeks before he passed, when he wanted to let me know that he’d gone as far as he could in his treatment for pancreatic cancer, he sat me down, and said,  

“Hey, brother… I’m a Dead Man Walkin’…”   

Those words have stuck to me like glue since then… 

There were many things about Jimmy that would make good food for song, but it is this, our most somber moment of friendship, that has stayed on my mind...

I rarely co-write, but love to collaborate…  For this tune, I asked my friend. Brooks Taylor, to co-write with me, as I knew that our minds were on a parallel journey…  The writing went smoothly, and we had a splendid session at Stagg Street Studios in Van Nuys, tracking on their excellent Yamaha grand…   In a session helmed by Trent Slatton, the three of us, all solid producers in the same room, only great music could be expected… 

Brooks plays the piano, and joined me in backing vocals...   Stevie Blacke added the emotive Cellos…   And I added some acoustic guitar and sang the track… 

This is simply a requiem, a remembrance, for my closest friend, Jimmy "Muffin" Yessian…  A friend to many of us, who raised the bar on all our songwriting...

Forever in our hearts, Jimmy…

The result is something with which, as both artist and producer, I'm exceedingly happy..  Many thanks to Janeen...  Her saw imparts the complete range of the emotions I felt while writing the song... A great artist's brilliant understanding of my track....

My Life Fits   Mix  031914

It's good to be back in the studio regularly again... Some loved ones lost, along with a bit of my musical mojo....   But, I'm back and working on my 8th solo record for release late this year, and have new tunes in the pipe...

However, this month's song is a cover; one that I have always loved...  I'm hoping to get the proper clearances, but for now, it will remain UN-downloadable, nor will it be going to my normal internet radio channels... I do not intend to profit from this is any way...  

Music biz legalese out of the way, I am pleased to offer this cover of The Motels' (Martha Davis), Only The Lonely...  The original tune reached No.9 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1982...  Martha Davis' haunting vocals on the original have stayed with me since...  I am considered a roots artist, and  the Motels are my roots, along with many other bands...  A lovely song...

Instrumentally, this is quite different from the original version, but I hope I maintained the soulful loneliness of the Martha's beautiful lyric...

There’s Something Wrong With John - a tune about an affable man who crosses paths with a beautiful, but cruel woman… And it changed him...  

The song, written through the eyes of a friend, is my homage to T-Bone Burnett, one of the very best music makers ever…

This is a suite of 2 songs, representing a journey from anger to forgiveness...   First up, Lessons of My Father...  And angrier, younger man looking back on my childhood, and the man who taught me so much, but not the way one might imagine...  "Always leading by example in reverse"...   Joining me on this tune,  Ed Tree on slide guitar...

Second tune, was a vivid dream that happened a decade after writing the angry tune... I dreamed a dream of forgiveness in a way that felt so real, the anger just floated away...

Greeting, friends…

This month’s tune for August is the first instrumental I have ever released ….

It's titled  Near and Far, the story of a love affair, easily visible to the lovers…
 
“From across the universe, I knew…..  You were meant for me, and I for you…”

This is the first song co-written with CC Ballou, with whom I co-penned last month’s tune, “There’s Something Wrong With John…”...   We have found some interesting writing chemistry, CC and me...  And, We have more tunes coming...   Great partners...

This song was our first foray together… The song has lyrics, but I’m attempting something, production-wise, that is proving to be an evolving thing, and is not yet ready for release… 

Early on in the process, though, I could hear that this tune would make
for a beautiful jazz guitar instrumental, in the style of say, Larry Carlton…  

The instrumental line is borrowed directly from the vocals already recorded…  

CC and I hope you can hear the romance in the guitar lines….  And Ed Tree played so beautifully to interpreting the existing melody line...

Near and Far  Instrumental  (feat.  Ed Tree)

In 1967, I was just 13 years old, when an after-school music show, GROOVY, came to North Hollywood Park, in a suburb of L.A.. I rushed there to see Linda Ronstadt sing her Stone Poneys’ hit, "Different Drum"…   She was entrancing…

On the same show was a singer I’d heard on the radio, Dionne Warwick, who sang two songs, "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?",  and "I Say A Little Prayer For You"…  

That day, my love affair with the music of Burt Bacharach and Hal David began, and continued through the years with a host of songs, including, "The Look of Love", "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head", through "God Give Me Strength", and beyond…   We lost Burt Bacharach earlier this year in February, (and Hal David in 2012) and so I began to feel like I wanted to honor their contribution to the music I have perpetually loved. An homage...

Starting with the bones of a song brought to me by CC Ballou, a great songwriter,  we crafted this tune, Near and Far, a story of romance-gone-global, told as a duet… 

As usual, the music is performed by friends of immense talent, who helped me produce the tune up from my basic percussion and guitar tracks…

Yesterday, I wrapped a 3 month gig, producing, editing, mixing, and mastering a mostly LIVE record, with raw tracks recorded at the Catalina Jazz Club, in Hollywood.  The artist is Tyrone “Mr. SuperFantstic” Perkins, and he is one soulful cat…   We’re friends, and we’ve worked together before…  Great voice, with almost perfect pitch, except when’s he’s going for an expressive moment…  And I always dig that...

Tyrone played me a live version from a phone voice memo of him singing Ed Sheeran’s, “Thinking Out Loud”, and asked if i might produce it and add it to his live collection…  How do you cover a mega platinum tune???

Well, I brought together my regular studio band, the OtherHand, and the mood is very cool...  The rest of the record is on fire...

Honest and completely personal assessment of some of my biggest regrets.....   Nick Kirgo plays expressively beautiful slide here...   This will be on my next album of songs, to be released  mid-2015...   This record will once again feature my studio band, the ever-changing OtherHand, made up of L.A.'s most tasteful players...   And though this is a folk tune, the Cd will indeed contain songs from my rock n roll heart, which just won't go quietly into the good night, thankfully....

On the Street, the first song on my new CD, Less is the New Black.....

Inspiration comes in many ways...  This song is based on the idea of a chance meeting...  But to create the mood of the tune, I chose a memory from the night I met the love of my life...  I saw her from a distance long before she saw me, and I thought, "I knew that I'd love her"...   I asked the band to imagine we were playing on a street somewhere, to no one.....   I hope it creates a picture or two in your own heads...

Lie Cheat and Steal

This tune has been kicking around my songbook for a very long time... Every time I sat down with it, it felt forced...  That is, until recently, when all the political chatter, coming from all sides, grew to such a loud din in my head, that I felt I had to answer, in the only way I know how - with hope and love...

I have been a fan of Syd Straw's since the early days of her career, admiring her way with lyrics, and with whom she chose to surround herself...   A mutual friend, Ellen Berman, introduced, and this song is the result of two kindred spirits, finding their way in the studio...

If this tune sounds sentimental, it is by design... We hope it pulls at your soul, and maybe even pull you in off a ledge or two...

Too Little Time

A crazy story about a night that never happened...

I love making music... Quite simply, other than a hug from a loved one or a good friend, there are few experiences that thrill than hearing a tune go from words on paper to a finished song...

Why You Wanna Make Me Mad? I don’t really remember the motivation behind writing the tune, but it came together very quickly from the first pressing of the “Record” button... And it continued right through the mix, so nimbly executed by Marc DeSisto...

I Just Need You

Yes, I know I am just releasing, Float, my sixth record… That said,  I have no intention of slowing down my current workflow of releasing one tune every month…  No rest for the wicked, I guess...

January is sometimes a reflective month, as we look for renewal in new year… This month’s tune is a somber one...  The original inspiration for it came from a movie, suggested to me by my good friend, Ed Tree...  Ingmar Bergman’s, “The Seventh Seal” - a tale of how death stalks us all...  What if death took on the visage of a man and engaged you as a person?  And what if he wasn’t quite so terrifying, and both humorous and philosophical?

This is the stuff of this month’s tune, “Shall We Dance”...

One song every month….

My current CD, Float, was recorded in full band format…  And I have several more bigger tunes in me, but I wanted to not forget where I’ve been -  my darker, folky side…  Seeing a few artists around town reminded me that it is indeed nice to stretch, but it’s nice to come home…

This month’s tune is "Death Wish”…  I have done things my whole life that made those around me wonder if perhaps I had one…  All of this fed my sense of adventure, which I will proudly own, but about which I won’t go into in detail…  

This a return to that lonesome,  southern "flavor that I favor”  so much in other artists like T Bone Burnett, Ry Cooder, and most recently, Ray Bonneville…

With me on this bare-bones arrangement are my intuitive brothers, Nick Kirgo on Dobro, and Daniel Rhine, on bass violin, whilst I handle the finger style guitar and all vocals…

Be careful what you wish for....

The picture says it all...  When you shake hands with the Devil, rest assured there will be unexpected consequences....   In my entire catalog of tunes, there some rockers, but this one feels almost like 'funk'...

Waaaay too much fun was had on this track...  I invited some familiar faces and some new ones to join me on this, but they are all friends, and EVERYONE really stretched themselves to make it great...

My Wallet and My Watch Are Gone...

A very short song about a very short relationship...

This month, I wanted to continue a newer phenomenon in my production - shared solos, two instruments talking to each other… It’s all about building space within my arrangement for the purpose of featuring these good friends in moments...  They pair up during solos, then go away then reunite... It just increases the overall energy...

Funny thing is, none of these players are ever in the same room with each other, so advanced thinking is the truly helping these moments take shape...

I so value my players. They are my friends, and they never just ‘phone it in.’  They constantly bring it, every month...

Imperfect Valentine

I dedicate this tune to the memory of a great guy, and even better player...  Tim Fleming...   He was one of L.A.'s premier pedal steel players, but  more than that... 
He was my friend....   Miss you, brother...

They say the dreams are unrealized fears or desires and this one is a recurring one of mine… I will likely never stop having it, but I hope that recording this song helps me slay that dragon, at least a little bit...

This tune is different than my usual guitar-based rock… In fact, there’s not a guitar anywhere near this, save for the sparse wanderings of Tim Fleming, my pedal steel player...

Special props to my friend and keyboard player, Marty Axelrod, whose minimalist piano style provided a ton of air, as well as the ‘chill’ and dreamy vibe to the tune...

I asked my friend, Terry Smith, one of my long time collaborators, to coach me through my vocal, because after hearing it, he said he thought I was possibly missing an important element in my performance... He simply said, “Brother, sing it like pillow-talk to her“....  So, I pulled my performance back a bit and close-mic’ed a more intimate and emotional vocal... Terry, as always, you remain a great producer... Thanks...

All together, we set a beautiful tone to a serious tune...

April Fool (So Much Love)

Making music with good friends is the BEST therapy, or maybe just the best way to avoid needing it....

During 2023, I’ll be prepping my 8th album of original music…   After that, we’ll see about a 9th… I have plenty of tunes of which I haven’t recorded a single note…

My studio band, the OtherHand, is around 30 players or so, changing from song to song…  One thing is sure - these are some of the best studio players in Los Angeles, and they are each and every one, a friend...  Lucky am I...   Always lotsa smiles at OtherHand...

My style of music?  Let's just say it’s rootsy, flavored heavily with British influences:  Lennon and McCartney, Del Amitri (Justin Currie), NRBQ, and Rockpile (Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds), and when I'm folky, Nick Drake...

I have many solo records to my name, and 10 other records for bands in which I play... I have produced and engineered around 20  full albums, and have produced more than 200 artists, for single song and EP projects...  I've also supplied quite a few songs for the TV show Absentia, airing on Amazon...

During the pandemic, I reinvented myself once again as a mixing and mastering engineer…  These are post-production skills for which I always paid, but I spent time with some of my friends (Grammy winners for their post work), and learned the basics… A hundred tunes later, (over 2 1/2 years) I had the knowledge…
