World-renowned mural artist Shepard Fairey and his team painted a massive, seven story mural of the Greatest, based upon a photo by Walter Bingham, at the Chestnut Street YMCA (at the intersection of 9th and Chestnut), two blocks away from the Champ's high school.  We hear sound from several Louisville luminaries at the dedication on April 26, as well as two of the team who painted the mural, Robert Zagula and John Furlong.

As part of this year's Big Read, author Jess Walter (along with Kurt Vonnegut's daughter, Edith Vonnegut Squibb) will be discussing the legacy of Kurt Vonnegut as well as the importance of free speech at the Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg, Indiana.  This event is on September 24, 2024, at 6:30 pm.  This event is free and open to the public but you must register in advance.  The link to the EventBrite registration page can be found below.  In today's podcast, Jess shares how Kurt Vonnegut has influenced his own writing, and we will also hear about Jess' writing process. The Community Music Alliance (CMA) is a hidden gem in southern Indiana, located at 215 W. Spring Street in New Albany.  In today's episode we hear from Owen Heritage, the CMA director.  Owen gives us an aural tour of the Alliance, describing their educational programs, recording studio, free performances that are open to all, and so much more.  Owen also assisted in the production of this episode, providing samples of music from Cherry Chubb and the CMA orchestra.

Debbie Fisher is a painter from Jeffersonville. A collection of her paintings is currently on display at the Jeffersonville Township Public Library, until February 18. The exhibit is entitled "Taking Flight in Color," which celebrates the use if vivid color in representational paintings. Dr. Subhranil De in a physics professor at Indiana University Southeast and is quite the polymath, with interests in photography, travel, poetry, writing, and art.  He published a memoir in 2024 entitled "The Time on the Gravel Roads," where he describes his journeys to several areas of the United States and the natural beauty and wonder he encountered.  He also contributed to a new form of art he describes as "sketching in negative color."  He shares his personal journey leading to writing this memoir, as well as what led to his discovery of the negative color technique.

An exciting, very large, mural has been recently added to the north side of the Clarksville flood wall, directly across from the Current 812 apartment complex.  This mural was completed by the Often Seen Rarely Spoken (OSRS) company, spearheaded by Jeremy L.  Jeremy describes OSRS, some of their southern Indiana projects, as well as murals in Louisville and beyond.  We will also meet Susan Nollner, the Director of Marketing for the Denton Floyd Real Estate Group in Jeffersonville, who reached out to OSRS and input on the mural's color scheme and thematic elements.  She also describes how approval from the Army Corps of Engineers was a necessary part of the mural process.

Dean Otto joins us to describe all things related to Speed Cinema, a local treasure that screens an eclectic blend of art house, foreign, and independent studio films.  He describes his goals to connect film to the  community, how he selects films to show, what international film festivals are like, as well as encounters with various actors and directors.   He also describes how seeing a film in a cinema with other people creates a unique community experience.

In today's episode, we will meet Al Gorman, a museum specialist with the Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center in New Albany.  Al rediscovered a late 19th century artist from the New Albany area, George Morrison.  The Cultural Arts Center has a current exhibit of Morrison's paintings that runs until August 16.  Al is also writing a book on Morrison that will be published in the upcoming months.

Renowned mural artist Damon Thompson adds another beauty to the Jeffersonville artscape, this one at the IMPCO building at 828 Spring Street.  Damon provides the inside story of how this design came to be, the process of creating a mural of this size, and reactions from passerbys as well as IMPCO.  Damon also shares how daffodils took on such a special meaning for him.  We first met Damon on Fresh Art back in 2021, when he he was in the midst of his Outside Society mural project, leading to a self-published book by that same title.  A Lucille Ball and Cass Elliot mural can be found at the south end of Mechanic Street in Jeffersonville.  And don't miss his Ruth Bader Ginsburg mural one block west of the Jeffersonville courthouse, near 431 Court Avenue.
