Disquiet Junto Project 0631: In a Silent Waveform
The Assignment: Take one held tone and make it dance slowly.

Borrowing a well-worn process from our old friend Alvin Lucier, I started this task by measuring the resonant frequency of my home studio at approximately 152Hz. 

I then generated a 15-second triangle wave with short 2-second fades at either end.

I played this back into the room whilst simultaneously recording the sound. Repeating this process gradually reinforced the fundamental resonant frequency of the room and rapidly diminished any tonic and harmonic semblance of the triangle wave.

I sequenced 32 iterations of this process with crossfades between them.

The room resonance starts to become apparent at the one-minute mark, then becomes prominent 30 seconds later with beating and slight wave distortion, where the triangle wave appears to inherit more complex, brassy qualities. As the room resonance became overwhelming, at the two-minute mark I moved the microphone to a more central part of the room. Then, to gradually diminish to room resonance I lowered the mic input (3 minute mark) so that it was no longer able to reinforce itself and gentle receded into the ambience of the room. Only vague, peripheral sounds and the weakened resonance can be heard in the final couple of minutes.
