Cities + Memory: Spring Project
I was attracted to the field recording from Hanoi, Vietnam of an old French wall clock playing the Westminster chimes because of the immediate surreal quality it had for me. Different levels of different cultures and places embedded into such a simple sound. So I wanted to express that surreal quality in my springtime composition. I was also thinking about the Lotus flower, the national flower of Vietnam. It is known as the flower of the dawn: a symbol of purity, commitment and optimism for the future. At night the flower closes and sinks underwater and rises and opens again at dawn. I thought the field recording of the chimes had this sinking and rising quality, along with the underlying multi-cultural origins. My hope was to express these feelings through my composition. So here is “Hanoi Blossom,” my slightly surreal take on springtime in Hanoi.

About "Falling Down":
“Falling Down in Slow Motion” was created over a two week period of insomnia. The
album plays with the abuse and destruction of classical acoustic instrument recordings and
blurred electronics rendering the leftover debris into a soundtrack for sleepless nights.
Each track on the album makes use of a variety of recorded acoustic instruments (violin, piano, clarinet, saxophone, voices, guitars, charango, field recordings, etc...) which were then manipulated with the help of granular synthesis and mostly performed with a midi guitar. The effect is rather orchestrally dystopic where it seems OdNu is channeling a diverse array of musical influences from experimental electronic, jazz, tango, 4th world music and more. 
Some artists that inspire and influence OdNu’s music are Astor Piazzolla, Jan Jelinek, Jacaszek, Jon Hassel and Murcof.
The listener of this album will find themselves entering into a juxtaposition of feelings under an architecture of melodies that orbit each other independently integrating and disintegrating. 
Each song feels like it inhabits both the past and the future, is both familiar and alien where one feels lost and found and also equally hopeful and sad. 
A cinematic and experimental album that is perfect for falling down in slow motion…

During my recent visit to London I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a soundbath created by Emma at Nada Healing at the Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery.  Thee paintings by William Farr caught my eye as a kind of kindred spirit.
This short work is a kind of rehearing of Emma's beautiful Zephir chimes.

Æther #010 by o[rlawren]

Evening comes early here in the far northern reaches of Europe.  The mist that shrouds the landscape is quiet, often blue, and filled with a heavy meloncholy.

Ümlaut is Jeff Düngfelder, a U.S. experimental composer/sound artist now based in the northern Connecticut countryside. The thematic concepts distinguishing his work are absence and silence; the ineffable exchange between viewer and image; random moments of stillness within a landscape in flux. Using a minimalistic, electro-acoustic approach, his elusive patchwork of field recordings and electronics merge the world of shadows and colours. His memory recordings expose the complex relationship between music and silence. 

In addition to his solo recordings as Ümlaut, Jeff Düngfelder mixes his own electronica with downtempo and jazz elements as a member of Intelligent Life, the trio that equally features Mike Brown on contrabass, and Joshua Trinidad on trumpet.
