In responding to the brief of - 'A sense of place', I was mindful that people have very different concepts of such a thing and so I have brought some varied musical influences to bear.
From the opening Taize influenced Lauds to the aromatic Haiku texts of the classical poets Buson, Tan Taigi and Issa where village life and delight in nature seem paramount. 
The near 'Disney' qualities of 'In my Dreams' combine with the mid afternoon prayer from the divine office.
Real Essex dialect from the pen of Charles Benham is next in 'I din knaow', a tale of rural life and tittle tattle ! 
Bushes and Briars is a setting of an Essex folk song as collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams from a shepherd in 1903 in Ingrave, Essex. It has been a long held desire to arrange this winning melody and text since I was in fact born in a nursing home in Ingrave Road, Brentwood. 
Compline completes the suite of songs over a near Baroque ground bass that culminates in a six part affirmation of community.
Students of compositional device may be interested in the approach towards a sense of unity. Melodic fragments appear again and again in different guise. The use of canon and fugato is common and three prayers from the divine office offer a formal balance - Lauds early morning, None mid afternoon and Compline the night prayer.
My fruitful and pleasurable association with Andrew Fardell and the Waltham Singers goes back nearly thirty years. From the premiere of my Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis, to the commissioning of Pandora Sketches and Blessings of the Kingdom (words by Patrick Appleford) and now on to Songs of Home, written to the brief - 'A sense of place'.
It has been a delight to respond to this community of singers once more and indeed the 'Fibre Optic Choir' from New Hall School.

In 1922 when Howard Carter unearthed the tomb of the 'Boy King' Tutankhamun among the glittering artefacts were a pair of trumpets, believed now to be the oldest operational instruments in the world. One silver and the other bronze, these instruments possess the most haunting harmonic series and curious sound qualities.
In 1939 the BBC recorded one James Tappern, a bandsman of Prince Albert's Own 11th Hussars who, not without considerable effort, extracted the long forgotten notes from the priceless instruments. Thus for the first time on the wireless millions of people heard sounds that originated over 3000 years ago.
For this piece I have used the interval shapes heard on this famous recording to construct a narrative which follows the reign of the young Pharoah 'In Youth' to his entombment 'At Rest' and on to the archaeological wonder of the early twentieth century in 'Discovery'.
There is of course the claim that the instruments possess magical powers which portent war and conflict. This composer has sought to couch the intervals in a peaceful dialogue between the Trumpet and Piano, anticipating some persuasive harmony and in celebration of the life and legacy of 'The Boy King'.
