Midnight Special

Med. tempo 60's Stax-like bass line w/ Ray Charles style Wurlitzer electric piano fills. It's about those trust fund friends everyone has had at one time or another who rarely had to work for anything, but with whom you wouldn't really want to trade places.

Beautiful People I Have Known

Ethereal guitar intro swimming in Echoplex and electric bass swells, dry mechanical verse over drum loop (choppy guitars in terse counterpoint inspired by 80's Wire), live drums on chorus with doubled gtrs. (think Suede).

Outro consists of rhythmic loop (record-skip of T.S. Eliot reading from the Caedmon series) .
Lyrics fatalistic, like reading through a very, very old journal which may or may not belong to you. The idea came from the Sonnets to Orpheus by Rilke (ooh, aren't we fancy?) but the connection is fairly oblique.

Happy For You

This began as a stark, droning four-track cassette experiment after reading a book about the making of Bowie's 'Low'. It became more dynamic after playing it live for a couple of years and gathered a few layers of noise as we eventually recorded it.

I Want More Lies

Short, repetitive and catchy, this was an attempt at capturing the feel of something from 'All Mod Cons'. The lyric points out that blame-shifting and guilt are as much a waste of time as watching a bunch of homeless people race shopping carts. Nowadays I suppose it would be baby strollers, but that would sound awkward. (No offense meant to the homeless).
