Episode 14: Answers in Unexpected Places

[Hang around me long enough and I'll write a song about you. (I may have already, but you don't know.) This one is about Sarah and Danny, but really is about anybody and everybody who taught me to create my own path. This song represents the realization that there are no footsteps for me to follow in; We're all stepping out on our own.]

[Written to honor everybody who "comes out", who is honest with themselves and others, I wanted a song to celebrate the inspiration of "gay kids today". The gay out kids in high school (real or metaphorical!) are the "person come after me" mentioned in the song. This is as close as I get to an anthem.]

[This is my attempt at a straight up "country-style" story song, but one that tells of a common nyc situation: being surrounded by 8 million people and feeling lonely. To me, it's a happy song because the loneliness will pass - the train will start again. It uses only two chords (Am and G) to imitate the start and stop of the 6 train.]

my life rolls along the 6 train
people on and off but look the same
smiling gets you nowhere
until someone smiles back, and then
the train starts again

see the old man riding with a cane
never knowing what or who's to blame
tries to talk to someone
and when no one's talking back, can't see

[This song is about the tension between what we wish for and what ends up happening to us. (See "Radio".) It is a reconciliation between those two worlds, a story of wanting what you have and living your dreams within your "real" life. "Heels on the ground" is a reference to high heeled shoes, but also to living life on tip toes, on the edge.]

Recently, I've been artistically and personally ironing out the reality of the fastly-changing music biz in relation to my dreams. This is a goodbye song, bitter because of the disappointment that my dreams are impossible, and sweet because reality will probably turn out better than I could have ever dreamed.
