Nocturne in A Minor

The year after graduating college I wrote a short Kyrie for the tiny church choir I conducted. That's the first minute of this piece. Recently that little Kyrie came to mind, and upon revisiting it I decided to complete it, adding the Christe and second Kyrie. Only after I finished writing this new material did I look at the completion date of the original and realize it was exactly 30 years ago, March 1990.

This is a recording of me singing all the parts, since choirs around here aren't meeting in person these days.

Jeffrey Bernstein is founding artistic and executive director of the Pasadena Chorale and High Notes and artistic director of the Los Angeles Daiku. Between 1997 and 2008 he was director of choral music at Occidental College. Bernstein has led fourteen choir tours on four continents and traveled extensively as a guest conductor, leading choirs and orchestras in Europe, Japan and throughout the United States. An active composer, Bernstein is the songwriter for “Let’s Go Luna” on PBS Kids. He has released four albums of original piano music, and his 21st Century 23rd Psalm was released on the debut album of the Los Angeles Choral Lab. In 2017 his piece The Human Journey was awarded second place in the American Prize for choral composition. A committed educator, Bernstein holds music degrees from Harvard, Yale, and UCLA and enjoys making music with young people throughout Pasadena.
