Song of the Wave

I and the shore are lovers :
The wind unites us and separates us.
I come from beyond the twilight
to merge the silver of my foam with the gold of its sand;
And I cool its burning heart with my moisture. 

At dawn's coming I read passion's law to my beloved,

Snow melts on mountaintops
while I am learning to sit still
and breathe and think about nothing else.

The end of Blackett’s Ridge Trail
is not the end of the journey,
despite what the sign says.

Tao k’o tao fei ch’ang tao.
What you are reading is not
the meaning I intended.

Another hiker arrives and points—
another crow—a black arrow
against a blue sky—cawing.

If all outcomes came with clear
explanations, one damn cause
you could offer like a photograph,
we could sleep like small children.

For proof, we don’t want excuses.
Smile for the camera.  If you can
imagine what makes you happy
then you’re already happy.

Look at the mountains again
dusted with fresh white snow!
The bright sun! Water flowing
into the dry river beds again.
