Can't believe the Animix series is already at number forty! and what a way to celebrate with this iconic mix from Philadelphia based @opheliaxz. The talented DJ & producer weaves an emotional, perfectly erratic and rhythmically exciting journey, filled with everything from ambient and downtempo to wiggly dnb & jungle tunes.

On this mix, Kelsey wrote "i wanted to showcase bass textured music in a different context, kind of a slow roller type of way with a few sneaky bits in between tracks.i have been fortunate to start traveling and playing out again and nobody here in the states dives into bass, dnb, dubstep stuff  often so i felt it really important to show off the textured bits and how it can be fun and versatile."

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features the New York-based producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist @keiyaa. 

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, keiyaA grew up singing in the Chicago Children's Choir, before studying the alto saxophone. Today, she combines her jazz training with stirring vocals and neo-soul sensibilities to create richly textured, yet introspective music. Her sound touches r&b, hip hop, and jazz, while also venturing into IDM, ambient, and experimental realms. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, keiyaA has created a mix that features unreleased music, remixes and collaborative works, creating a deep, spiritual flow of experimental grooves, bouncy bass lines, and fourth-world rhythms, all combined with her signature mix of song, rap, spoken word.

Augustina Moore (b. 1999 Vashon Island) is a trans songwriter & musician, DJ, & sound designer living and working in Seattle, Washington. As a selector and producer, August’s offerings blur reconstructed clubland frenetics into the hyper-familiarity of dancefloor heritage groove.

For this episode, she brings us a mix titled “Dawn of a New Day”. In her own words:

For this mix I wanted to embody and explore the concept of the “day-night cycle”, and the way video game music helps define and set atmosphere in relation to time of day. The mix is split into three distinct sections (morning, day, and night) and follows a loose imagined narrative of a day in the life of a game character! I like to use music in a very functional way to soundtrack my day and activities (I have specific music / playlists for things like studying, cooking, going for a walk, taking a shower), and was imagining this character / the listener doing the same with this mix: brushing their teeth and making breakfast to the first section, running errands and taking the train to the second, and winding down while reading a book to the final section. I pulled VGM from some of my all-time favorite games & composers, games that I've been meaning to play forever, and also some weird obscure OSTs my friends have put me onto (shoutout Cori, Mason & Natasha !!!). Who are you? Where do you live?
 
I'm Kelsey Knotts currently residing in Pilsen, Chicago.

How do you hydrate in the club?

With Topo Chico and lime! It's kind of a Chicago thing thats stuck with me. If i'm somewhere else in the world, any type of carbonated water is chill.

Advice for beginning Dj's?

My advice for Dj's starting out is to find out what works best for you, don't let someone tell you that there is a definite right or wrong way to DJ. For technical aspects try counting the 4 to the floors listen for the claps and kicks. If you can't find a pair of CDJ's or Technics any kind of music software is TOTALLY CHILL. Make due with what you have don't let some jerk tell you other wise because gear is expensive!~ Oh and practice makes perfect fall down and get back up again, messing up train wrecking is totally chill just push the track back into place, most of the time people don't even notice a small blip even the greatest Dj's of all time mess up!

What do you wish to see in the future for the dance community?

I wish to see my friends thrive and in general would love to see more support within groups in America towards underground dance music because It's really hard in the DIY community to put a rave/show on anywhere in the states. It costs a lot of time and money. I have high hopes that communities will all continue to be diverse with line ups as well.

Fav late night snack?
Hot salsa and restaurant style tortilla chips w/ a whole dill pickle
