Cool Female Dj Sets & Mixes Part Seven 2024

This set was a different journey for me. 
I knew I had all of this new a very different feeling music the key elements of the tracks didn't mesh as well as a traditional sounding journey which would be in key and genre, then moving onto a new sound scape of sounds, something I spend a far bit of time on.  Its not common for me to play one genre, but I do most definitely make sure the sounds have their own family members, meaning that when you hear the next track its an easy fit and makes the set 'flow' a certain way. 
I feel like my sets are very different since I have started playing more diverse music and taking way more risks, some of which make it sound less than perfect - but - art isn't perfect and neither am I so, fuckit, I would rather play a bunch of sounds and songs that don't work or are harder to keep in time than play it 'safe' and only be recognized for one aspect of mixing, being smooth transitions, i personally prefer to hear a DJ mix and keep in time a track or two, something about that whole sound is a massive turn on for me, no idea why. 

I work hard on this set for sure, but even up to the night before I played it, it wasn't my 'traditional' clean journey sound, and it was tough going to this incredible venue with the mind set of 'well, I'll see what happens' instead of 'this is my first track and I know every track and transition after this one' because knowing what i am playing gives me a tremendous amount of comfort and confidence while playing  - but when I finally played it, it felt - different, I was more connected to the music and was able to form this story of music and make it new.

There's so much we can do with the craft of mixing and making music, if you've ever known a DJ and musician going through a hard time and listen back to their music you can hear it and that's what happening and that connects us to each other.

Like most art some people will get it and someone people won't connect or hear it, but that's the magic, I can come off stage and hear 'I loved that one Hip-hop track you played' and have almost no idea what they mean, but understand what they are saying, the experience is 'Hip-Hop' to them.

I also used some mixing techniques that are normally used when mixing Hip-Hop which was great fun and was done to high light the next song choice, this is used when I  mix Hip Hop because its all done by ear and vibe you can't really go into a Hip Hop set wanting it to sound as smooth as a house or techno set, where you can layer 32 bars of the tracks together. I think I was doing this to pay attribution to the original sounds of Turn tables where you could and would see people using effects such as 'the show' of one vocal cut to bring the audiences attention to the following track coming in, which allows the DJ to get them ready for the incoming track and drop,  now we mostly use a cued point loop, which is great but it not the same as a 'show track style' because you actually need to use the count of the bar loop and bring it in at the same spot at each point, otherwise it sounds pretty rough and overall kinda, well, choppy. 

Everytime there's a massive change in the style of music I play, it feels 'chunky' because it takes a while playing it out in order for it to feel smooth and mesh with me well enough for it to be a very clean feel. 
The extra 10% of any craft are what make the good great, and the greats just good. 

Honestly, I love playing and making music, mostly for what it can do for our conscious state of being - the all inspired and loved up party people of today are the ones who make the world a better place tomorrow and if art has no place then we as a community will also have no place.  
I loved playing at the Revs Cage.

Leah Marie is a DJ based in Melbourne, Australia. From playing classical piano for many years growing up to developing her first interests in electronic music as a teen, music has always been a huge part of Leah's life. She decided to finally get behind the decks in 2019 and since then has played at some of Melbourne’s most well-known venues and events. 

Leah loves progressive and melodic music that not only has dancefloor drive, but also aims to evoke emotion within the listener. She is a firm believer that music should connect with the mind, body and soul. Leah has concocted a one hour mix for us which encompasses a mixture of afro house and deep melodic house with tribal-percussive elements.

Hello everyone and welcome back to the PFG Progcast, our weekly journey around Planet Progressive searching for the finest underground beats for your aural pleasures!  

Today see's us hit warp speed back to another favourite destination of ours... Liverpool! The historic home of some of the worlds best clubs, events and DJ's PFG welcomes one of our own behind the decks, ready to show his skills to the rest of the world! Give it up for Kenny Lawler!


Kenny Lawler was heavily influenced and enticed by electronic sounds, repetitive beats and melodic synth pads, ever since being first introduced to them in the mid 80's. The first record he purchased, on vinyl, was 1987's “Krush - House Arrest" and the rest is history.

 Introduced to the underground club scene in 1992 at the Coconut Grove in Liverpool, he has been an avid follower of deep and progressive house, techno and electronic sounds ever since. Kenny was also a regular at Cream from 1995, then later at the infamous Liverpool underground night, "Alderaan".

This was a night of proper underground Techno and Prog House which heavily influenced and shaped his musical direction. In an intimate room hosting DJ's such as Anthony Pappa, Lee Burridge, Danny Howells and the resident Steve Parry, how could you not get a positive education??

Mostly playing at parties with friends over the years, Kenny later spent time promoting a night in Liverpool called "Aztec" at the Lemon Lounge, The Masque and the home of Cream at Nation. Aztec brought in some great DJ's and acts such as Hernan Catteneo, Infusion and Phil Hartnol of Orbital fame to name a few. 
His biggest influences include, Detroit Fiend, Steve Parry, John Digweed, Sasha, Mr. C, Anthony Pappa, Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Dave Seaman, Nick Muir, Sam Monie plus many more... 

Fast forward to now, Kenny hosts his own radio show on the 2nd Friday of every month on Saturo Sounds called Closer Distancing and has not long started his music production journey, with hopefully one or two releases forthcoming in the future. This set was one that I really looked forward to, I always love playing @revolverupstairs - the atmosphere there is always one of intense listeners and you can only really prepare to play, what you play depends on how the beautiful party people are feeling collectively at the moment you jump on. 
Because its so vast. 

Put it this, whenever someone asks you 'what should I play at Revs' besides doing your homework and listening to the DJ mixes who is playing before you and after you ( this is a massive way to increase your awareness of how the night / day is going to flow) 
Its determined on the audience, what do they or dont they need right now, at this very moment, sure whats the DJ before me playing plays a big part in it - its a vibe, do we need some light funky house, would a dash of prog do well here? or it that too heavy for these ears right now? you know, you need people to be captured and feel something, feel warm, feel happy and light, peaceful, like its all going to be ok, tomorrow is yesterdays problem - that sort of thing. 

Anyway, that might seem a bit deep for thinking about 'what am i going to play ' but its not, not really, most DJs would think along those lines when jumping on and if they do set prep than your thinking about the whole journey from start to end, at least I try to imagine it that way.
The more you play at a venue for a party, the better you can get a sense for what people need at what times, theres no fast quick way to play the best set of your life each time ( even though that is always my goal) its always important to think about your audience, especially the ones who are their each week, because they are ones who know what to expect you know at 7pm at Revs what do people expect to hear? I'd say good beaty music and depending on the day maybe a light bassy riff with some sweet flowy vocal.
