The third movement from my work for full orchestra, chorus and Asian percussion instruments. 

"Celebratory Dances" explores the sounds I heard as a Filipino-Chinese Youth. Growing up, we'd have different rituals, the most prominent and memorable of which is the Chinese New Year celebration. There would be loud fire crackers everywhere and there would be a yearly dragon dance around our neighborhood, complete with Chinese cymbals and big red Chinese drums, sounds that I used in this particular work. These "noises" were meant to chase away the bad spirits and usher in good luck for the year ahead!  I also played percussion in my high school Chinese orchestra some years ago; a factor that influenced the use of Chinese percussion instruments in this piece. 

This recording is from a reading session by the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra as part of their 1st Young Composer's Initiative.

This year, National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab becomes the second Filipino musician to become a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award. MAESTRO FILIPINO with DZFE's Daniel features Cayabyab's first concerto: his New Work for Violin and Orchestra commissioned for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra's 40th anniversary in 2013.
