The third movement from my work for full orchestra, chorus and Asian percussion instruments. 

"Celebratory Dances" explores the sounds I heard as a Filipino-Chinese Youth. Growing up, we'd have different rituals, the most prominent and memorable of which is the Chinese New Year celebration. There would be loud fire crackers everywhere and there would be a yearly dragon dance around our neighborhood, complete with Chinese cymbals and big red Chinese drums, sounds that I used in this particular work. These "noises" were meant to chase away the bad spirits and usher in good luck for the year ahead!  I also played percussion in my high school Chinese orchestra some years ago; a factor that influenced the use of Chinese percussion instruments in this piece.

Smaller and Smaller Circles - "ALEX!"

Miss Austri, Latin for Mass of the South, is a five-movement work for a capella choir. It's form lies on the traditional musical setting of the Roman Catholic Mass Ordinary; Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus dei, with Credo being omitted, an optional Alleluia is included. 
This mass, however, just like any other masses written by major composers, is not intended for liturgical practice in church, but to be performed in a concert setting.

In writing this Mass, it is of the composer's intention that the Cebuano (dialect of the composer) version of the Mass be set into an independent piece of music, elevating it into an artistic form. The work is also a personal homage or offering to the Giver of all Talents. Musically, Mass of the South is an accidental fusion between the composer's western influences and his interest in Philippine indigenous rhythms and melodies.
Despite the heavy influence of western music, there is no motivic figure that unifies the movements together. Repetition figures prominently in this composition, as in a kulintang ensemble, or the dabakan drums, As a whole, the work is Filipino in character.

V Agnus Dei

This year, National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab becomes the second Filipino musician to become a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award. MAESTRO FILIPINO with DZFE's Daniel features Cayabyab's first concerto: his New Work for Violin and Orchestra commissioned for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra's 40th anniversary in 2013.
