This is a re-recording of my set from The Listening Party Sunday Sesh 002 (10th June 2018, Melbourne). First set release :O

It is not pin-point perfect but hey, what is ;) Moving on to more mixes and viiiibes in the very near future. Working harder, diggin deeper.

This mix was curated to reflect the nuances of winter blues we all go through in our ways, here down under in Melbourne, Australia. Highs, lows, light, dark, they all exist on the same spectrum.

I hope to pay homage to the beauty of instrumentals, different textures of sound and how space creates volume and depth inside you.  

Along with independent artists such as Melanie Faye and Nicholas, I've included some local Melbourne gems such as the ever-evolving Big Words and Horatio Luna. Beatmakers like Laxcity, LAKIM, Blue Lab Beats and Sango come along. Legends like Donald Byrd, D'angelo, Ebo Taylor,Fleetwood Mac and Patrice Rushen say hi too. Heavy contemporary acts come in the form of Frank Ocean, Moonchild, Mac Demarco, LNTG, Robert Glasper, Jazz Liberatorz and Sufjan Stevens. It's a big hang. 

I hope the mix carries you through dimensions of emotions and some bounce to you!

Hi everyone it’s been awhile from me! 

Since my last published mix I’ve been keeping my ears and mind open and have been learning as much as I can as a ‘selector’ enthusiast. And occasional party thrower :P (@thelisteningparty fam I appreciate you so much! You already know!)

We are so blessed now with multiple channels of music that allows it to be so accessible to anyone curious enough with an internet connection. Whilst spoilt for choice, increasingly savvy algorithms also signal for aspiring selectors/curators to venture out of the box. The intention truly must come first, before all else. If we let our lives be automated, who is telling the real stories?

I've been inspired by elements of audio from pop culture that are simply a reflection of the life we experience as characters of our own saga. 'Her' was released in 2013 and we are not too far away from being in a dysphoric relationship with an iOS in 2019. SOS! 

I'm learning so much just be simply being observant, engaged and truly present both in real movement and online. On the spectrum of genres, it's pure joy just dwelving into the different sub-genres, the stories they convey and how they decide to move you. Where they come from, where they're going, how the artists intend them to be, how it transcends listeners, and how producers construct / deconstruct / reconstruct them. What inspires them?

Among Nujabes’ countless hallmark contributions to pop culture and personal OSTs, is ‘Shiki No Uta 四季ノ唄’, the ending theme song of cult anime series Samurai Champloo (2005). Within a team of hand-picked hip-hop producers, the Tokyo native worked closely with creator Shinichiro Watanabe in providing the audio landscape for the series to flourish as the pioneer of hip-hop anime as a sub-genre. Following the success of both Cowboy Bebop and Champloo, Watanabe went on to deepen his exploration in music and worked with Flying Lotus for his animated short film, Blade Runner Blackout 2022 (2017). Most recently, Watanabe produced the accompanying animation for Flying Lotus’ single, ‘More’ off his latest album, Flamagra (2019) that premiered on Adult Swim. In this unofficial edit, Lupin samples ‘Shiki No Uta’ without the original vocals of Minmi, replaced by a heavier body and swing.

Stones’ Throw’s vibe maestro, Mndsgn (‘mind design’) revibes Toro y Moi’s Still Sound from his sophomore release, Underneath the Pine (2011), the segue from his ‘chillwave’ debut, Causers of This (2010). The bootleg edit is found on Side B of Mndsgn’s mixtape ‘frugal earth’ (2013). Both genre-bending artists in their own psychedelic right, have stacked an impressive decade since their debuts, keeping fans and critics surprised with their ingenious approach to composing their own time-travelling signatures. Under his cosmic treatment, ‘Still Sound’ signals Chaz Bear’s honest account of his loneliness, 

‘there was a finer life / when I was with my friends and I could always see my family / that’s what I still want now’

Kieren Lee and Nasty Mars are some of Naarm’s brightest lights in her evolving soundscape. Quite literally the sound of Melbourne streets, busker and artist Kieren Lee also runs as the flip side of Big Words’ gold soul coin, alongside frontman Will Scullin. Often mentioned with the same optimism, is crooner darling Nasty Mars, aka Marlee Noronha. Occasionally billing as the full project, Nasty Mars & the Martians, Noronha naturally wears his Prince-like presence, transforming any concert hall into a cornered confession, with soothing ease. Both Big Words and Nasty Mars have an impressive track record of opening for international acts and local festivals but it is their own productions that are most worthy of mentioning. Big Words and Nasty Mars are affiliates of Melbourne label Valve Sounds and are undoubtedly priming with new gusto.

Strongboi is indie pop sweetheart, Alice Phoebe Lou’s latest side project, adding another layer to her affable and unapologetically raw persona. A duo act with her current bandmate, Ziv Yasmin, Strongboi amplifies Lou’s effortless insouciance and adds to the infectious danceability through the progressive disco-dub melody.
