Creation Story

Marley Carroll’s latest offering is a modern descendant of the classic Warp Records sound of the late ‘90s, which paired plaintive, elegant analog melodies with glitchy breakbeat drums and gave birth to a constellation of landmark records like Richard D. James Album and Music Has The Right To Children. Carroll cites the lo-fi visuals of the era’s video game titles as a major influence, and “Ice Cavern / Water Temple” borrows its name from Ocarina of Time’s two most evocative levels.

The vintage analog synths of his 2018 breakout album Flight Patterns have returned, paired with crystalline shards of bit-crushed textures and pointillistic melody bubbles. The sonics are leaner and more refined, the compositions bolder and more confident. “Ice Cavern / Water Temple” reveals a producer at the peak of his powers and moves Carroll out of the realm of playlist-friendly background beats into the arena with contemporary heavyweights like Jon Hopkins, Rival Consoles and Skee Mask.
