Soundcloud connections are the best! Even though we never met https://soundcloud.com/jennyloco in real life, we feel we know her through her involvement in the digital scene and her carefully crafted and highly eclectic Dj sets. The Colombia-born, California-raised and San Francisco-based DJ has been digging music since the late 90s and recently decided to bring her extended sound knowledge to the light and record mixtapes ranging from lounge and chill atmospheres to sweaty club vibes. From electronic to more organic oriented music, she has a strong appetite for slow and dark beats with psychedelic twists, with her own vision of mixing and transiting from energy A to energy B. We now just hope she will keep on surprising more ears and brains like she did with us. Enjoy the ride!

For this Mbuki Mvuki episode we have the pleasure of listening to a fine track selection of Barbarella. She is a DJ and producer from Dresden / Germany. As music has always been an important part of her life, she was testing and collecting different styles, before she finally found her home in deep, melodic and bassy sounds from all over the globe, somewhere between tradition and modernity. The major influence on her musical creation emerges from the spanish-speaking parts of the world, with a special dedication and love for Cumbia, as you can hear in her sets and productions.
Barbarella is also co-founder of "Pauken & Trompeten", a non-profit-label, podcast series and DJ-duo.

Mbuki Mvuki Mix #21 with Barbarella

Hekske (the little witch) and Falke (the 10 year-old witch apprentice) got a rude awakening by a loud rumbling thunder. They were still tired from the long flight of the day before, when they followed the Río Magdalena upstream before a couple of bald eagles showed them the way to the Sabana de Bogotá, a beautiful lush green plateau in the middle of the majestic mountains of the Cordillera. They had spent the night under a majestic Colombian oak tree, where they met a friendly Hercules beetle … easily the biggest and most impressive beetle they had ever seen.
Meanwhile, the thunder and lightning came quickly closer and a few minutes later a torrential rain lashed down on the forest, while many bolts of lightning lit up the morning sky. Some lightning strokes were terrifyingly close by and these were almost instantly followed by deafening thunder, which echoed in the nearby mountains. This was by far the fiercest thundershower they had ever experienced in their whole life.
Hekske and Falke huddled together at the foot of the oak tree when they heard a strange sound. It was the sweet voice of a young girl, singing an age-old song. When they looked up, they saw an old woman and a young child walking in their direction, apparently unfazed by the torrential downpour.
The old woman and the girl gave a warm (and very wet) welcome hug to Hekske and Falke. The elderly woman had beautiful silver-grey hair. She turned out to be a Muisca witch and she was almost 600 years old. The girl was her 10-year old granddaughter, who was born during a fierce thunder shower and she always wants to dance and sing in the rain whenever a thunderstorm lashes down on the Sabana de Bogotá.
A few minutes later, the rain stopped as abruptly as it started. The Muisca witches took their guests to their hut, where they gave the soaking wet girls dry dresses (with elegant patterns) and offered them a cup of warm Colombian Coffee, which tasted so good up and brightened up the mood of the witches.
A little later they climbed a stairway which was carved out of the mountain slope. The progress was slow as the 600 year-old Muisca witch’s legs were frail. They climbed all day long up the endless mountain slope, until night time fell. That was the moment when the old witch couldn’t go any further, so she waited on a bench while the 3 girls continued climbing. Soon it became pitch dark until a glorious full moon rose above the horizon, lighting up the sky. The girls climbed higher and higher on the stairway, while the moon and the stars came closer and closer. And when they reached the summit of the mountain, they were surrounded by stars on all sides. The stars had beautiful neon colors and they were incredibly close. The little girl stretched out her hand, and to her amazement she could touch a star. Hekske and Falke did the same, and they felt the soft neon energy of the stars, each one distinctly different form the others. The witches stayed up on top of the Cordillera Central, surrounded by twinkling stars until the sun rose, and the stars gradually faded away. Then the girls witnessed the most epic sunrise they had ever seen …

The beautiful set you put on suddenly brings you out of rhythm, but getting up to skip the track is no longer an option.

We have been scouting for the perfect Sunday morning sets for quite a while already and while "Eigentlich heissen wir Klaus" & "Mattmosphere" have been steady suppliers of them for us, we also developed the idea of asking befriended artists to record one hour of music, to which they like to stay in bed with a loved one. 

It's an intimate ask, but most of them said yes. 

Julia aka @ismetra from our friends at @otawa-rec contacted us a while ago with the idea of making a sensual podcast and hence it was only logical to have her kick off the series, which will from now on be released every two weeks on Sunday morning.
