Lewis James returns to Original Cultures with Desire for Infinity, his second EP for the label following from Krakatoa earlier this year which received support from dance music luminaries including DJ Shadow, Sinistarr, Dawn Day Night, Om Unit and Kidkanevil.

The creative road to Desire for Infinity has not been easy, with the EP undergoing multiple rewrites and changes yet after all was said and done it became clear that this new collection of songs is arguably Lewis James’ best work so far. The seven tracks that make up Desire for Infinity may seem disparate at first but there is an underlying unity that soon becomes apparent, a clear desire from the producer to break on through to the other side.

Opener Space Banquet is a gentle offering, a slow jam for digital lovers that leads us into Her Jewels, a track that delicately unfolds towards an epic crescendo, a sonic tale of reaching for the stars. On Midnight, Lewis rekindles the magic that made Powerchild a highlight of his previous EP by once more inviting Dolor on vocal duties. This time around the young American prodigy takes the guise of a dark and mysterious crooner, turning an inspired ode to late night romance and soul searching over a production that is as sensuous as the lyrics. Whole marks the half-way point of the EP and a sharp turn from an introspective quality to the music towards a no-holds-barred dancefloor mindset. Lewis shows his talent for crafting catchy productions that lie somewhere between rave and hip hop. Worse for its part packs more weight and attitude than the entire current trap trend ever could while the EP’s closer, All or Nothing, takes Bollywood for a ride in South London, gun cocked and all.

The release is rounded off by two remixes from young Irish talent SertOne and London's LV, two artists currently involved with Original Cultures. Available in digital format with artwork from Paper Resistance.

Out 12th May, the second in the Archipelago Remixes EP series brings more stunning new versions of tracks from Hidden Orchestra’s second album, ‘Archipelago’. Established and rising stars - Dam Mantle, Mungo’s Hi Fi, Floex, submerse and KRTS – work their magic on producer and band-leader Joe Acheson’s original productions, across two 10” records in a hand-stamped and numbered sleeve, limited to 500 units worldwide.

Opening the first 10” is “Seven Hunters (Dam Mantle Mix)”, which brings a noir-ish intensity to the original, a firm fan favourite. The Glasgow based Notown/Wichita signed producer re-programmes the original drums, creating a sense of space and suspense, and eliciting admiration from Acheson, whose heavily layered organic beats are an integral part of the stirring Hidden Orchestra sound, even requiring two kits in the live show: “it's the kind of way I treat drum recordings in my own work, so it's really nice to hear it done to my drum tracks”.

“Flight (Mungo's Hi Fi Remix)” sees an eagerly awaited hook-up with the Scottish crew, of whom Acheson has long been a fan, having partied at - and played on - Mungos’ legendary soundsystem at Knockengorroch Festival. Here they transform the intricate, folk-influenced “Flight” (which boasts almost a million soundcloud plays) for a bass-heavy dub dancefloor, while skilfully retaining snapshots of the original orchestration and atmosphere. 

“Disquiet (Floex Remix)” finds Floex returning the favour for a Hidden Orchestra mix of his own latest single. This charged, hypnotic version shows the dancier, more electronic side of the Czech clarinettist and producer’s work; twisting and heightening existing sounds, not least the heavenly harp solo, for an epic effect. Floex’s second official Hidden Orchestra remix, this adds to a growing list of joint ventures from these two like-minded creators. 

Two artists from Berlin’s Project Mooncircle label - London based submerse, and Brooklyn’s KRTS (the latter with a  bonus digital cut) – remix “Spoken”, each ramping up the strikingly percussive intro and spiralling down a different yet equally fascinating experimental electronic bass music path.

The EP is an intermission between Jenova 7's debut album SOUL FOR SALE (jenova7.bandcamp.com/album/soul-for-sale) and the upcoming album THE SOUNDS OF SECTOR 7 (jenova7.bandcamp.com/album/the-sounds-of-sector-7). Antwerpian beat-wrangler Sixfingerz returns to Cold Busted for Silent Storm, his latest crucial long-player. Sixfingerz has established himself through six albums (also for the likes of Wegrowwax and Pragmatic Theory), with his last full length adapted into a theater performance. Sixfingerz also has the distinction of winning the legendary Stones Throw Beat Battle series around 20 times in a three year period. It goes without saying — his beats are strong.

Silent Storm continues Sixfingerz’s fascination with atmospheric textures and warm, vintage sounds. His influences are global, drawing upon instruments and styles from all over the world. Sixfingerz aptly describes his tracks as “an adventure into somewhere” — he’s merging disparate influences to create new territories. This is heard on the album’s “Breeze,” uniting potent hip hop beats with traditional Asian flavors to a dreamy effect. There’s also the gentle, guitar-strummed “Sol” which helps to bring out the sun in the darkest night. “Derecho” is a cinematic piece that’s part spaghetti western, part folk song, and part bass-beat concoction. And there’s “Heart Of The City,” which revs things up with a big rhythm but keeps the musical wonder intact.

Sixfingerz continues to stretch boundaries and Silent Storm is a bold and enjoyable statement. Take this adventure into somewhere exotic and groovy.

Jenova 7 is the musical “nom de plume” of Boston-based multimedia artist Michael J. Sirois (born 1989). His genres include trip-hop, downtempo, chill-out and instrumental hip-hop. He was featured on Mushroom Jazz 8, the latest volume of legendary DJ Mark Farina's iconic chillout compilation series.

He is most recognized for the “Dusted Jazz” instrumental series, distinct for exploring jazz grooves, organic drum breaks and moody, cinematic vibes. His style is influenced by the pioneering trip-hop artists of the 90s such as DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, DJ Cam and Portishead, as well as sample based Golden Era hip-hop producers such as DJ Premier and Pete Rock.

In late 2010, after graduating from college with a degree in film, he moved to Los Angeles for a year and started making music as “Jenova 7” with the trip-hop netlabel Dusted Wax Kingdom. In late 2013, he joined the Los Angeles based Cold Busted record label.

As a self-taught musician, his style has been inspired and guided by his versatile taste in music and his love for visual storytelling. Every album is meant to be the soundtrack to an imaginary film. His albums are a blend of the past and present—a mix of vintage crate digger samples accompanied by live instrumentation. His solo performances often feature original cinematic background visuals set behind simultaneous MPC beatmaking and improvised guitar playing.

He has collaborated with French trip-hop producer Hugo Kant and produced instrumentals for Craig G of the legendary Juice Crew hip-hop collective. He is also a member of the enigmatic trip-hop trio Wax Triptych, alongside fellow artists Mononome & Mr. Moods.
