This is probably one of most significant projects of the Fall season (last quarter of 2025).  Been working on Black Peaches for some time now along with another "bonus" EP coming up soon.  I wanted to compile several vibes that eases the soul, a type of afro rhythm / beat mixed in with some newer style genres (ethereal, house, and hip hop); you'll definitely hear a couple of nostalgic keys.  Album will be available on Bandcamp Friday (Oct 3) as well.

The Cold Busted label showcases their international bona fides with a collaborative album involving two producers separated by a half-world’s distance. From one side of the globe comes Jenova 7, known to friends as Michael J. Sirois, a multimedia artist from Boston and a member of trip-hop trio Wax Triptych (with Mononome and Mr. Moods). Then all the way over in Ulyanovsk, Russia is the young producer Eddie Shinn, author of the acclaimed Cold Busted debut The Plastic Jam as well as The Third Is Not Superfluous, his album in cahoots with Step. Now, A Cosmic Safari takes this international concept and launches it skyward … the album’s songs take place in an intergalactic sound-space. There’s “Flying Cabs”, which envisions a future that’s funky and bright, with hip hop beats, chiming Rhodes piano, squelchy synth lines, and trippy guitar riffs. A “Cosmic Girl” is encountered, loose and free, with an ’80s style rhythm embellished by cowbell percussion and floating melodies. “Intergalactic Noir” could signal a new eponymous genre, displaying a distinctive drum beat underneath funky flutes, cool keys, and the sound of space pals getting down. These are just three of A Cosmic Safari’s eleven tracks, and Jenova 7 & Eddie Shinn have delivered a full set that is out of this world.

Conceived in Athens, Greece, The Blue Square is the duo of Radim (Vasilis Sourais) and Radical (Christos Volotas) who have come together with a love of noir atmospheres, old spy films, and dusted, jazzy beats. Since their beginnings in 2010, The Blue Square have been making waves with their explorations into instrumental hip hop, nu-jazz, and trip hop, and earned slots DJ’ing alongside Wax Tailor, ASM - A State Of Mind, Bonobo, and Gramatik. Paul Cheeba of Morcheeba is also a fan, premiering a track by The Blue Square on the widely listened to Trip Hop Nation podcast. 

The pair’s self-titled debut album – and their first release on vinyl – has been issued by Greek label Melting Records and delivers heaps of cinematic vibes and crucial rhythms. The Blue Square have expressed a desire to create ‘soundtracks for imaginary films’ and their album certainly fits the bill. “Believe’, the opening cut, quickly sets the tone with a heavy lounge feel wrapped in vibraphone melodies, saxophone riffs, and classic beats. “Tic Toc” mashes together a number of styles and sounds, featuring desert guitars, vintage keys, and hip hop vocal drops over some seriously dope drums. “Mama”, with vocalist Esterina, showcases the diversity of the crew, as it’s a deliciously jazzy vocal number that transports the listener to a nostalgic club scene while firmly rooted in its contemporary base. 

These are just a few highlights from the eleven track album, and the different moods and sounds provide an infectious ‘sonic film’ from The Blue Square’s imagination. Dive in and drift away.

Heartless

Jenova 7 is the musical “nom de plume” of Boston-based multimedia artist Michael J. Sirois (born 1989). His genres include trip-hop, downtempo, chill-out and instrumental hip-hop. He was featured on Mushroom Jazz 8, the latest volume of legendary DJ Mark Farina's iconic chillout compilation series.

He is most recognized for the “Dusted Jazz” instrumental series, distinct for exploring jazz grooves, organic drum breaks and moody, cinematic vibes. His style is influenced by the pioneering trip-hop artists of the 90s such as DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, DJ Cam and Portishead, as well as sample based Golden Era hip-hop producers such as DJ Premier and Pete Rock.

In late 2010, after graduating from college with a degree in film, he moved to Los Angeles for a year and started making music as “Jenova 7” with the trip-hop netlabel Dusted Wax Kingdom. In late 2013, he joined the Los Angeles based Cold Busted record label.

As a self-taught musician, his style has been inspired and guided by his versatile taste in music and his love for visual storytelling. Every album is meant to be the soundtrack to an imaginary film. His albums are a blend of the past and present—a mix of vintage crate digger samples accompanied by live instrumentation. His solo performances often feature original cinematic background visuals set behind simultaneous MPC beatmaking and improvised guitar playing.

He has collaborated with French trip-hop producer Hugo Kant and produced instrumentals for Craig G of the legendary Juice Crew hip-hop collective. He is also a member of the enigmatic trip-hop trio Wax Triptych, alongside fellow artists Mononome & Mr. Moods.
