2023 Favourites

Lonely

Wrote this one in 2019.  Thls one is mostly about my childhood growing up in Fox River Grove.  We lived on Opatrny, across the street from the Opatrny's.  I mowed Mrs. Opatrny''s lawn for $5 and she always had juice and cookies for me after.  The street was named after her father I believe.  This is back before the suburban sprawl took over the town and things were still wild, you could adventure and we were always outside playing.  This is back when summers lasted forever.  The name I carved in the tree gives reference to another song, Martha ... who I crushed on pretty hard in 6th grade.  The tree is still there.  This one is for my friends, as thanks for making FRG a special place to grow up.   A lot of baseball, music, sleepovers, wheelies, and skateboarding...a beautiful and very happy time in my life...one that I hope 35 years from now, my kids will look back and feel the same way about the childhood we gave them.  My Mom, a single mother, worked hard to give me the best she could and I count myself lucky to have had her and am grateful for the years we had in this town.  There is a reason I brought my family back here.  Mom, Scott, Mark, Nina, Martha, Jen, Karen, Stephanie, Wendy, all y'all know who you are, and some of you are gone already...some of you are still a strong force in my life.  I hope we all live forever!  THANK YOU!

Und weil das Land ihm unbekannt
Fragt er

Hier sprach der Engel

Du bist im Reich der Schmetterlinge

Er aber wohlgemut und heiter
Zog achtlos seines Weges weiter
Da kam wie er so weiterglitt
Ein Frauenbild und schwebte mit

Als ein willkommenes Geleite
Anmutig lächelnd ihm zur Seite
Und um Sie nie mehr loszulassen
Dacht er die Holde zu erfassen

Doch eh er Zeit dazu gefunden
Schlüpft sie hinweg und ist verschwunden
Ihm war so schwül er musste trinken
Nicht fern sah er ein Bächlein blinken

Er bückte sich hinab zum Wasser
Gleich fasste ein Arm ein blasser
Vom Grund hinauf ihm beim Genick
Doch er entkam mit viel Geschick

Sein Hals war steif und krumm
Nur mühsam dreht er ihn herum
Und ach wie war es ringsumher
Auf einmal traurig öd und leer


Urplötzlich springt aus einem Graben
Begleitet vom Geschrei der Raben
Ihm eine Hexe auf den Nacken
Und spornt ihn an mit ihren Hacken

Und macht sich schwer wie Bleigewichte
Die Hexe quält ihn fast zu zunichte
Bis dass er matt und lendenlahm
Zu einem finstern Walde kam

Ein Jägersmann dürr von Gestalt
Trat hervor und rief  ein dumpfes Halt
Schon liegt ein Pfeil auf einem Bogen
Schon ist die Sehne straff gezogen

Jetzt trifft  der Jäger ihn in sein Herz
Doch erwachte der Schläfer voller Schmerz
Und sprang vom Bette ungesäumt
 Sonst hätt er wohl noch mehr geträumt
