charlotte sits in stillness explores questions raised in Sofia Coppola’s 2003 film, Lost in Translation. “Who am I?” “What am I doing?” “Where (and with whom) am I going?” The film follows a man and a woman as they develop a complicated relationship that is best, but inadequately, described by the word “love.” Throughout my quartet, the idea of a centralized beat becomes a silly notion - a fantasy - and rhythm cannot accurately describe the experienced relationships. Togetherness is relative, and closeness remains ambiguous.

This quartet is a reflection upon my experience in an isolated and stagnant place. In this extended period of time, I felt comfort and unease become less distinguishable from one another. Though no part of my experience was especially sudden or discontinuous, the subtleties were always in flux. It became evident to me that I cannot hold a steady state, nor can anyone or anything; and at the closest level of observation, all that remains is weakness and volatility.

When you begin or resume payments, any unpaid interest will be added to your principal balance. Your increased principal balance will then generate more interest, increasing the overall cost of your loan. This process is called capitalization. 

You can save money by making interest payments. Paying down the interest on your loans will save you money in the long run by reducing the amount of interest that's capitalized. For example, on a $5,000 principal balance with a 7.9% interest rate that capitalizes after 1 year, paying the interest will save you about $177 over the 10-year repayment period.

Note that this is not a bill, and you aren't yet required to make payments. But if you can, making interest payments now will save you money in the future.

In the same way that Harry Partch sought to express his life as a hobo through his “Barstow Inscriptions,” in my piece, “Interest Accruing Update” (2018) for Karplus-Strong Kithara and Spectral Vocoder, I seek to express what it means (to me) to be a student in a technological age. While Partch sought freedom through his hobo lifestyle and deviant aesthetics, the lifestyle of today’s students is primarily sedentary, bound in front of a computer screen, and our ongoing studies result in a crippling amount of debt, imposed upon us by America’s wealthy, powerful, and abusive corporate masters. Thus, the musical content is driven by the compound interest rate on my student loans, 6.7%.
