Blob’s Love Affair and I

Echo Ho moderiert die zwei Folgen des ONpodcast im Juli. Blob, ihr Co-Moderator, eröffnet einen Dialog, um die anthropozentrische Perspektive auf das Zusammenleben aller Arten auf der Erde zu erweitern. Blob ist kein außerirdisches Wesen aus Science-Fiction-B-Filmen, sondern ein beliebter Forschungsgegenstand von Wissenschaftler*innen weltweit, bekannt unter dem Namen „Myxomycota – Slime Mould“, ein Schleimpilz mit Köpfchen. Da Einzeller Verhalten erlernen und an Artgenossen weitergeben können, kommt es zu Begegnungen, deren Potential auch Künstler*innen untersuchen. Verschiedene Modelle der Episteme und Techné werden erforscht und erprobt für die gemeinsam pulsierende Übertragung von Gedanken über das „Techno-Unterbewusstsein“. Im Licht eines kosmisch-technologischen Sinns: Philosophieren durch musikalische Kollaboration. 

In Episode eins: Im Wald, bei Blob zuhause, treffen wir uns mit Miki Yui, einer in Düsseldorf lebenden japanischen Künsterlerin und Komponistin. Seit ihrem ersten Album „small sounds“ von 1999 kultiviert sie ihren Stil einer sparsamen, mysteriösen Musik mit Klängen aus Synthesizer, Sampler und Field-Recordings, die die Schönheit der Leere, das Phänomen der Koexistenz und Resonanz enthüllen. Blob hat sich bereits mit ihrem Musikstück "Babbling (mono)" liiert, dem letzten Track auf ihrer siebten Platte “APERIO” (2020, Hallow Ground). Zwischen Realem und Imaginärem machen wir einen Spaziergang durch ihre fragile, minimalistisch-organische Klanglandschaft. Durch gemeinsames Zuhören und den Gedankenaustausch wird jeder Atemzug von uns Teil des gesamten pulsierenden, unaufhaltsamen Lebens.

Blob’s Love Affair and I 

Echo Ho is hosting the two ONpodcast episodes in July. Blob, her co-host, initiates a dialogue to broaden the anthropocentric perspective towards a coexistence of all species on Earth. Blob is not an alien creature from science fiction B-movies, but a popular research subject for scientists worldwide, known as „Myxomycota - Slime Mould“. Since single-celled organisms can learn a behaviour and pass it on to conspecifics, encounters occur that also artists examine for their potential. Different models of episteme and techné are explored and tested for the jointly pulsating transmission of thoughts via the „techno-subconscious“. In the light of a cosmic-technological sense: philosophizing through musical collaboration.

In episode one: At home in the forest with Blob, we meet Miki Yui, a Japanese artist and composer living in Düsseldorf. Since her first album „small sounds” in 1999, she has been cultivating her distinctive style of a sparse, mysterious music with sounds from synthesizers, samplers and field recordings that reveals the beauty of emptiness, coexistence and resonance. Blob has already linked up with one of her music pieces, Babbling (mono), the last track on her seventh record, „APERIO” (Hallow Ground, 2020). Between the real and the imaginary, we take a walk through her fragile, minimalist organic soundscape, listening together and sharing thoughts, each breath of us a part of the whole pulsating uncontainable life.

Jeremy Young's August Tape Sketches is a work of tonal collage rooted in the exercise of balancing improvisational haptics with focused restraint.

Young is a composer and improviser of concrete electronic tape music from Montreal, Canada. A member of the Montreal-based experimental poetry_sound unit Cloud Circuit as well as a part of the electroacoustic modern classical trio Sontag Shogun, Young's work uses a sine and square wave oscillator system, 1/4" tape loops, captured and filtered radio and EMF signals and sound treatments from amplified surfaces and objects. His primary artistic interest lies in the analog treatment of surface-based audio and the notion that both the audio signal and the media used to record it, should equally contribute to the creation of a sonic narrative.

August Tape Sketches dwells in extended notions of time and space, with melodic fragments repeating and dissolving in intuitive fashion, allowing for a listening experience on the edge of logical musical information. The fragmented takes centre stage as Young develops a narrative of contemplation and indirect emotion. On this album, Young conjures up gently dissociated musical sketches that are soft-spoken yet far-reaching. The musical language used is that of electroacoustic composition, but Young fuses that with a perspective of instinct and benign distance. The definition of things on August Tape Sketches is not one of confrontation, but in the treatment of the sounds used lies its true nature, dreaming up a lullaby of concrete musical.

I recently bought this tape for $0.10 and it had test tones for calibrating two portable Marantz tape recorders. I decided to make them the focus of this improvisation. Here's what I used:

Changed Forever

On the outskirts of the city of Tempest, near the Western Sea, two people stand at arm's length from each other, dressed in garb and gear of the ancient world and surrounded by a cornucopia of woods and silks. 
Who are they? Businessmen, refugees, soldiers of fortune, or merely unfortunate souls?
For what cause have they taken up sword and spear? For country, for glory, for a faraway heart? 
What do they stand to gain from this battle? Power? Prestige? Purpose?

None but our squires know - their eyes locked together and their steel soon to follow. Witness their epic duel as the square waves clash and resound at the crossroads of fate!

Showdown at Renfaire

A somewhat obvious fact that’s becoming more apparent: emotions are not localized in thoughts, but extend down into the body.

Traces of the past get lodged within palaces of muscle and bone, and get stuck there. 

Even if mentally, you’ve moved on from a certain event, the emotional signature lingers and propagates the pain that brought it into existence.

This afternoon, I was overcome by the feeling of being stuck. I sat, locked in place, unable to move. There was a long list of things I wanted to do, but couldn’t bring myself to do any of them.

All the while, inside of me, there was an unpleasant feeling: Was it sadness, loneliness, or despair? I couldn’t tell. All I knew was that I wasn’t feeling good. Locked in place, I drifted off to sleep.

Some time later, I woke up. My throat was parched and I felt guilty. It was almost 6pm and I hadn’t done most of the things I had planned to do.

I turned the tap, filled a glass and watered my throat. In that moment, I recognized the problem: I was disconnected from my body. I put on a body scan meditation guided by Jon Kabat-Zinn, unfurled the yoga mat and lay down, listening.

I shifted my awareness from my thoughts into my body, turn by turn visiting every part. I became aware of the density of my bones, the flow information in my nerves and the gentle pulsing of my bloodstream.

I noticed the feedback loop between my physical processes and my thoughts: how wreckages from past traumas manifested as strange contractions.

I allowed my breath to pass slowly, gently and evenly across the entirety of my being, dissolving the points of constriction.

With each breath, the blockage opened and created space for renewed circulation.

In that moment, I was greeted with the impulse to make music.
