"The album was recorded in 3 consecutive days in which we just jammed - hence the name of the album - JAM - and was the initiative of Harake - a project of Kol HaCampus 106fm radio.

The general idea was to get into the studio, without any songs in advance, and jam using our equipment and some extra instruments to create a live album.

The result is a collection of intuitive tracks all made on the spot, very different from the trio's usual work process - in layers and over time.

Thanks to this process, the tracks got a dynamic living character that compliments the electronic format, giving the album its unique colour.

The sessions got an unexpected twist due to the November 2012 bombings in Israel/Palestine. Alarms that set off at peak moments got us all into a very specific zone which gave birth to some of the songs - Master Of Rockets, I Cried, What Is Madness are among its' children.

UPDATE: The winners of the DJ Shadow remix contest have been announced! I'm not one of them, but it was great to hear the ones that shadow picked. So glad Archive's Waltz version was in the ranks, played that on my KCRW show on Wednesday. I'm not bummed one bit, everyone who Shadow picked killed it in their own way, and since I only set out to make what I consider to be a beautiful song... I feel successful in that. This year, the legendary "High Priestess of Soul", Ms NINA SIMONE, would be 80 years old. A woman who changed the social and political fabric of America with her fearless songs, her yearning voice, and her raw, worn soul.

Perhaps what has always moved me about Nina's body of work is that her recordings, even her fame in itself, were all auxiliary - just a means to support her continuing education and aspirations of becoming a classical pianist. Her songs had their own meanings and subjects of course, but by reflecting on her life's work as a whole, you can plot the points between these songs like a constellation. They were rungs on the ladder of her ever-climbing journey. You can hear in each recording a completely pure reflection of how she was feeling - passionate, strong, devoted, frisky, suspicious, proud, or just downright tired.

THIS FRIDAY NIGHT, JULY 5TH 2013, Los Angeles gathers for a sure-to-be-epic evening of free music and revelry around this particularly authentic high priestess. Join us all at GRAND PERFORMANCES for "YOUNG, GIFTED, and NINA", featuring LA's deepest musical luminaries from the Jazz, Soul, Blues, Poetry and recording world as we come together for this majestic tribute.

This event is produced with unmatched dedication by JONATHAN RUDNICK, and the visionary music direction of DEXTER STORY,  the men behind last year's also epic "PEACE GO WITH YOU, GIL" tribute to Gil Scott-Heron. Yours truly will be opening the evening with an invocation DJ set, and speaking throughout the show.

New York singer and activist ​Danielle Ponder pairs up with Melbourne cinematic soul outfit ​Karate Boogaloo to deliver ​“Look Around,” a haunting reflection on the times we live in. ​“Look Around” was written in the studio with the band in the first days of 2020 when Danielle was in Melbourne, and at the time was conceived as a cry for help in the literal firestorm that was engulfing Australia. As 2020 progressed, the words that came in that moment of inspiration seemed to reflect each of the multiplying calamities this year has presented. When the death of George Floyd ignited indignation across the USA and the world, the lyrics to Look Around could not have been more apropos.

In Danielle’s words: “fires were raging through Australia and smoke covered the sky. It felt like all of our human sins had gotten the best of us and we were paying a price. I didn’t know that when I arrived back home in the U.S, the world would only get darker. I feel like my past self wrote this song for my future self knowing what was to come.” ​This song would help Danielle through what has been one of the most painful times to be Black in America.

Coming from different continents and different backgrounds was no obstacle to Danielle Ponder and Karate Boogaloo forming an immediate musical connection in the studio. Karate Boogaloo is a formidable studio band with years of studious focus learning soul music and its history. The instant connection is obvious on ​“Look Around”, ​as the band and Danielle sound like they’d been playing together for years rather than hours. Black Lives Matter, while being a US based movement, has a strong resonance in Australia where Indigenous people are massively over-represented in prison populations and in fatal interactions with the police. Thus, sales in July and August are going to be donated to the Equal Justice Initiative in the USA and Warriors Of The Aboriginal Resistance in Australia.

Info: After one and a half decade and more than 400 releases, Compost Records bundles some of their finest tunes as Various Artists digital download compilation albums. The variety and full spectrum of Compost’s repertoire has never or rarely been presented in form of a musical genre compilation. These releases will be compiled or DJ-mixed by Compost’s artists and are available as digital downloads, except in some rare cases very very limited as 500 CDs.

Ever since the beginning of electronic music the voice was considered an instrument that shouldn’t be forgotten. So when everybody considered the beats and the bass as the King, there was still love for vocals. Sometimes to create an atmosphere of tribalism with its own mantras, sometimes as a work of poetry. But always present.

From the depths of the Compost vaults vocal tracks were selected and mixed by Rupert & Mennert. Compost and Rupert & Mennert are more than proud to present two shining examples of all the great songs that were sung and produced in the last two decades.

Could one say that this particular ‘Compost Selection’ defines a genre? Well... not entirely. Do all the great vocalists that sang on an immense amount of Compost releases deserve their own spotlight? Well... hell yes!

The first take has the appropriate sub-title: Brothers.

On this very compilation, fourteen tracks are selected and mixed together. With vocal contributions by Robert Owens, Victor Davies, Colonel Red, Marc Frank, Joseph Malik, Ovasoul 7, Jamie Lloyd, Ernesto and many more. The tracks will go back and forth through all kinds of genres. From the deep folk electronic of Zwicker , the latin-jazz by Intuit and the spoken word by General Electrics to the beats by Wagon Cookin’, Daniel Magg, Phreek Plus One and TJ Kong & Nuno dos Santos. General Electrics | Take You Out Tonight (Featuring Lateef the Truth Speaker)

My plan was to not remix, but re-play the song in a full live setting, as if in 1975 Bowie recorded the original and then flew to Brooklyn (or even Jamaica) to cut another take with my players. Everything was recorded 100% analog to tape. All on equipment that was available before 1975. My approach was to take influence of the Jamaican musicians (and recording styles) of the mid-seventies, and their infatuation with American Soul music. If you dig it, that would be great. Knowing that BOWIE digs it, I’m over the moon.
