When I was touring in Mexico, I was lucky enough to have some days off during a visit to Mexico City, and took a trip to a nearby Toltec/Aztec Pyramid site called Teotihuacan. It's a beautiful place, but when I asked about its history I was told that most of the knowledge and culture of the people who built it was lost, with the arrival of the Europeans. Now it's turned into a rebuilt money making tourist trap, with the loss of its real meaning.

I recorded the space and sounds there with binaural mics, so I could try and capture some of the feeling of it, including a storm which came in, and then I wrote a strings part inspired by the feelings of the visit there. Tom Hodge brought the piece to life by playing a piano part in addition, and I loved the piano so much I decided to make two parts, the first with the piano only, combined with the binaural recordings and a randomising delay feedback network, and the second part with the strings. The first part of Teotihuacan is available exclusively from the free download Quotient Series, and the second part will be coming on the Artefact EP in April.

The composition "Binary Digits" is loosely built on a binary structure. The work can be divided into three sections:

The 1st section has a "bit-length" of 1 (2^0). All the parts, like the clarinet and the piccolo/Eb-clarinet, are single.
The 2nd one has a "bit-length" of 2 (2^1). In terms of counts of eighth notes, is twice as long as the first section. Also, all parts are like a duet, in a free canonical form.
The 3rd section has a "bit-length" of 4 (2^2) and lasts twice as long as the second one and, therefore, four times as long as the first section. And as you can guess, this is kind of a quartet, again in a free canonical form.
In all sections, instruments like the flute, oboe, and marimba play a "binary counter". One hit stands for a "0", and two hits stand for a "1". There is one bit to count in the first segment, two bits in the second one, and four bits in the third.

And there’s one more thing: The structure of this work also partly relies on the prime numbers "11" and "101" (3 and 5 in a decimal system). The maximum value of a 4-bit number is 1111, equal to 15 in our common base-10 number system. "3" and "5" are the two prime factors of 15.
