Rock Mania uses a PT2399 delay chip, which is specified for a maximum delay time of 0.3sec. The chip can be pushed for longer delays, perhaps up to 0.6 or 0.7sec, but at the cost of increasingly grainier repeats. They can be made subjectively cleaner by limiting their bandwidth using a low pass filter. At some point the repeats can become excessively dark, though. Where to draw the line? What is acceptable to you? It's a tradeoff, like so many things in engineering...

I practiced the bass line of this Level 42 song for more than a year before I was able to actually play it at normal speed. I then recorded it to celebrate, and here it is. I never got around to mixing it properly -- it's a half-assed mix, but that's where I'm leaving it. 

When I started practicing, my thinking was that if I can ever manage to play this really tough song, I can play anything else. How wrong I was! The learning never stops, and many apparently simple grooves are actually harder to play than flashy lines -- harder to play well, with the right feel, tone and groove.
