All This Time

A short adventure on the chords from my tune "Prayer For Safe Passage" --- this from July of 2015, but there is quite a bit of evolution going on with this form. Probably revolution is a better word!!

Safe Passage Jam-A-Round (short version)

This is a very slow and moody take on the Drunken Sailor form. There are basically two electric dulcimer parts, sometimes in dialog with each other, and there is a very quiet two-handed tapping track in the background - also on electric dulcimer. I have a slightly more elegant contraption now to hold my humbucking pickup, with no rubber band--- I use four little wood screws to hold the pickup to the blocks (if I ever go into production with these things, I will go to machine screws.

Way Hey and Up She Rises

From the 1990 album "Into The Fever Rain". Jerry is one of the best dulcimer players in the USA (Check out his soundcloud page). He's playing rock Appalachian dulcimer as if a rhythm guitarist while I'm playing a mini-guitar > Electric 5-string Mandolectra tuned in a guitar register as well as bass.

Blues In D - Jerry Rockwell & Niles Hokkanen

I'm a one-man music laboratory -- mostly centered around the electric and acoustic mountain dulcimer, which I make myself in my workshop in South East Ohio, and more often these days in Wooster, which is Northeast Ohio.

I'm currently working with the aspects of the mountain dulcimer which tend to calm and soothe -- though I go through strong reactionary cycles now and again, when I have had enough of the meditative stuff. Sometimes this takes the form of wild filter-synched electronica, and sometimes it is more bluesy.

My music contains many influences, with Celtic music being the primary one most of the time. I've always been an improviser, and I have had some formal jazz training (Ohio State WI-89 BA Music), though I'm not a jazz musician by any stretch. 

I love working with extremely simple, circular chord progressions: those progressions that seem to go on for hours and are hard to stop playing. There is a strong minimalist vibe to this.

I also love the DRONE which is one of the most appealing aspects of the mountain dulcimer. These days, I tend more toward arpeggiating the open drone strings of the dulcimer, rather than the more strident strummed drone typical of the more traditional styles of playing.
