I Fear My Love

I haven't played guitar (or piano) for longer than a minute in over a year and a half due to my disease. But I was invited to record a Tom Petty song for a radio tribute which will be on K-Rock (local radio station)on Sunday night. It hurt my hands like hell. It still hurts and I recorded it two days ago. But I felt I had to. I waited to post this here until after that aired. It's free for you if you would like to download it. 

I always felt Petty's lyrics were often overlooked because of his general popularity and place in the everyday. But he says some deep stuff inside those simple 3 and 4 chord tunes. He was loved by the rockers, the heavy rockers, the metal kids, the casual classic rock radio listeners. Seemed everybody had a few Petty songs they loved, even if they didn't know they were his.

This wasn't always my favourite Petty song. Just suddenly hit me this one day how intensely sad I felt this song could be. Defiant and not giving up, but still intensely sad. Everything is right with the world for a minute...but not 100% right. In the midst of this good time he still wishes she was there.

Room At The Top (Tom Petty tribute)

Here is a tune recorded by my band King Nancy back in 2001. It's fitting because the song was written about the events of two holidays and what went on between the two, from New Year's Eve to Valentine's Day. I feel this was a turning point in my lyric writing. I still love these lyrics. And of course the band helped make it even more explosively dynamic and dramatic.

Part of me has always wanted to re-record it with strings. Maybe someday I will.

When The Sunlight Hits My Drunk (King Nancy)

Mortality is a strange thing. No matter what you do you have no control over when your time is up. 19 years ago I had a medical emergency. A so near-death situation that you could just leave out the word "near". I was rushed to hospital and obviously I'm here writing this so things worked out. But the experience changed me. It did a bit of a mind job on me that I guess I'm not sure if I ever fully recovered from or not. Every year the anniversary of it sneaks up on me no matter how aware of it's approach I am days before. February 7th, 1999. 

I did what any songwriter would do and began trying to write about it. I believe I began writing ideas down a few days later. But this song would be the most elusive one for me for years. I never finished it until much later. King Nancy, my band at the time, recorded and released it on our 2007 album This Is Not A High-Five. There's not many who could understand the feeling of how exposed and vulnerable I felt recording the vocals for that particular song with 4 guys in the control room watching me. Luckily the guys understood how emotional it was. I did the lead vocal in one take and was a mess by the end of it. I can remember taking off the headphones and sitting down. I could hear the talkback mic come to life through the headphones on the other side of the room. Andy, our producer, said something about coming in to hear it and I could hear the guys say "give him a few minutes". I recall having a sort of chuckle to myself about that. Thanks guys.

Singer/Songwriter Jerry Stamp has been battling an auto-immune disease for several years now. Crippling pain didn’t stop him from writing and recording his 6th album Rogue Doubt. If anything it fuelled the fire. Classically-trained, road-tested and with a seemingly inexhaustible work ethic, Stamp has had to reconfigure how to play guitar in his lush percussive orchestral style and renegotiate his operatic vocal acrobatics. Rogue Doubt wasn’t made in spite of his current struggles. It was made because of it. Jerry may not get to perform as much as he used to but you can bet when he does it will be a dynamic and emotional outpouring. He performs every show as if it were his last because it just might be.
