“Exstasis: Restored” is a reimagining of Azrel’s 2023 album, featuring remixes from genre-defining artists such as ‘Quit Life’ and ‘Sun Angels’, along with 2 new original songs to act as bookends. This new project recontextualizes the ideas of the original album through a cohesive and wide-ranging set of productions; moving from pure ambience to euphoric ecstasy as each artist breathes their own new life into the vapors of their respective tracks. “Exstasis: Restored” further delves into the relationship between the natural and synthetic as shining saw leads intertwine with soft piano and strings. The track ordering is restructured from the original, and along with the new songs at each end, “Exstasis: Restored” creates a new ebb and flow of energy as the album progresses, exchanging each artist’s lens on the body of work as it moves.
Azrel is an ambient/trance producer based in Tokyo. His debut album ‘’Exstasis’’ released in 2023 on Mizuha, exploring the deconstruction of the typically dance-heavy soundscapes of trance music; reforming them in a more experimental context - pairing trance plucks and arpeggios with acoustic elements and delicate ambient pads. ‘’Exstasis’’ acted as a foundation for Azrel’s experimental style focusing upon a fantasy-like, naturalistic feel. His signature style tends to adopt a playful and meditative grace, yet occasionally exploring a more melancholic catharsis in places to add to the narrative feel of his projects. ‘’Exstasis: Restored’’ comes as the result of links made with like minded producers, many of whom inspired the sounds on the original album. This new project acts as to solidify the concepts of the dynamic between natural and robotic through collaborations ranging from Lorenzi’s bouncy futuristic style, to Ichiro Tanimoto’s own nostalgic and peaceful take on ambient trance. Azrel’s production style is distilled at the two poles of Exstasis’ original dialectic between ambient and trance / natural and electric, and with the two songs punctuating ‘’Exstasis: Restored’’s runtime they serve to finalise the essence of ‘’Exstasis’’ before exploring something new in future releases.
