"Sorrowful Sounds" blends upbeat feel-good indie rock sounds with heart-achingly relatable lyricism. It's about growing up and growing out of innocence. It's about that first love you held so dear and poured everything into. It's about all the intense emotions you feel during that first relationship - the ones that make you feel alive and the ones that make you feel like the world is going to end. It's about trying to find yourself in the midst of all that turmoil and jubilation and eventually coming to terms with the reality of it all.

”Den 30 augusti 2022 packade jag en väska, tog min gitarr och lämnade ett 20 år långt förhållande som helt kapsejsat. Jag bodde då i Santa Fe, NM och jobbade i bageriet på Wholefoods market.
Två veckor tidigare hade jag stått på scen med mina gamla vänner i David & the Citizens då vi återförenades för första gången sedan 2006.
Det var en av de utlösande faktorerna till att jag till sist tog det drastiska beslutet att lämna allt, bokstavligen, och åka hem igen.
Jag ville spela musik.
Jag ville ha ett sammanhang, ville andas, ville vara mig själv. 

Tankarna snurrade på flyget, livet passerade revy på något sätt. 
Santa Fe till Dallas.
Dallas till London.
Jag var fri.
Jag hamnade i Göteborg och skrev American Airlines inom ett par dagar.

Omslaget till den här singeln är en teckning av den enda ägodel jag tog med mig; min gitarr. 
Den pryds av ett enda klistermärke; en bagage-etikett från flyget.
Det känns passande, på något sätt.”

"People Move On was written amid the disintegration of a pretty significant relationship. Although I was probably terrified, this song feels like me trying to convince myself otherwise: that people do this all the time, that they move on, that they survive, that there are better things on the other side. I think for this reason the song has the driving, forward momentum that it does. It was an act of manifestation, propelling us into the future." - Jess

Oh Me, Oh My

Second album CARE/TAKING is due for release June 14, 2024 on Tender Loving Empire Records. First single "People Move On" is out now. 

Currently based in Los Angeles, New Zealand-born Jess Cornelius spent her musically formative years in Australia where she released four critically acclaimed albums under the moniker Teeth & Tongue.

In 2016 Cornelius began working under her own name, and moved to Los Angeles after releasing the ‘Nothing is Lost’ EP. Her follow-up album, “Distance”  was released on Loantaka and Part Time Records in 2020.

Jess Cornelius writes arresting songs that capture the disorientation and endless possibilities of being in flux.  Where Cornelius’ 2020 debut Distance found her untethered moving across continents, CARE/TAKING has the songwriter firmly established in her California home but no less at a crossroads. Over 10 intricate and immediate songs, she grapples with squaring global crises  with the transformations and responsibilities in her life. It’s searching indie rock that’s as biting as it is comforting.
