With My Voice

I decided to enter motherhood as a single woman. During a period of questioning and listening, I dreamt of my son. I knew that Cedar was meant to be here at this exact time, despite how difficult it might seem for me. I celebrated his creation and had no doubt that he was a being that needed to be here. 

The expectant Mbuti mothers enter the Ituri forest alone to receive a song for their unborn child that will be sung throughout the child’s lifetime, as a reminder of where they came from. Inspired by these women, I decided to do the same. Entering the drippy Cascadian forest, I emerged with a song from the twigs, moss and fern that called my son Cedar forth to bloom. “Cedar” was written and recorded during the pregnancy. I’ve been singing his song to him ever since.

Cedar

On a walk in the woods behind the little A-Frame cabin I was staying in while living with the Camp Singing Wind community, I spotted this majestic bird. We took each other in for what felt like half the hour, though it likely was no more than a few minutes. I had a thought that this being was the Holy Spirit of the land. It felt regal, powerful, and good. I later wrote “Great Grey Owl” about the experiences I had while living on this particular piece of land throughout the seasons. 
Upon discovering the musical compositions of 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen, I got chills when realizing that her song to the Holy Spirit, O Virtus Sapientiae (O Wisdom), wove itself perfectly into the piece I had already written. I liken the Great Grey Owl to the Dove of HIldegard's O Virtus Sapientiae and am honored that as a "Homemade Jams" winner, the women of Portland’s Resonate Choir will be a part of giving voice to the Great Grey Owl, arranged by Kristin Gordon George.
