Echolocation Through Labyrinth (excerpt)

the fifth movement from "Six Little Shpils", a cycle of six short pieces for glockenspiel duo.

Molto Giocoso! after Prokofiev op.22 #5

a nuthatch scales the side of a tree, scuttliing down and around its trunk.
cast against the side of the sky in this particular way, the nuthatch becomes an orientation against the grain of most passerine birds. 
calm yet sharp, the white-breasted nuthatch will use its size and force to pilfer from their slightly smaller cousin the red-breasted nuthatch.

as soon as the myrtle changed directions, it changed directions again! 
to me, catching a bug looks like a game. the bug’s movements are similarly jagged and jarring…
will Myrtle, the yellow-rumped warbler catch her prey?

six or seven laughing gulls circle overhead, moving slowly, almost concentrically. they let out a burst of cackles, squeaky overtones shimmering as two separate times seem to circle against each other and the sky.

Commissioned for Piano+ #25 by Teodora Stepančić. Performed 5/30/21 outdoors on a stoop as part of a series to create pieces that could be not only presented safely but also respond in some way to the environment.  Participants, each equipped with an individually-strung chime and mallet, come together to collectively respond to environmental cues including wind, cars, birds, and each other. Recording engineered and mastered by Assaf Gidron.
