A Promise Made

Wonderbound Artistic Director Garrett Ammon and Jesse came together for the first time in 2011 to create Vagabond Hill, a ballet choreographed to the music of Jesse’s first album Devil’s Red. Early in 2013, Manley and Ammon embarked on a new collaboration entitled A Gothic Folktale, this time partnering with the talented mentalist Professor Phelyx. The vision for this new work was inspired by magical realism, incorporating tarot as its core theme. In October 2013, A Gothic Folktale was brought to the stage, receiving critical acclaims, and the collaboration was featured on Rocky Mountain PBS. Live recordings of the final two performances were produced into an album which was released on April 26, 2014.

Jesse Manley’s music is unique. The inspiration for Jesse’s sound orginates from a duality that seeks to blend old and new. While Jesse’s sound is rooted in traditional folk music and verse, his music is a unique artistic voice that is often described as the re-creation of a time-honored sound.
 
Since moving to the Denver area, Jesse has honed his musical and compositional skills into those of a “mature songwriter with a well-developed style (Eric Eyl, Westword).”  Jesse has become a fixture of the Denver music scene, playing at many established local venues, as well as participating in local festivals such as the 2009-2011 Denver Post Underground Music Showcases (UMS) and the 2011 Local Flavor Festival.  In April 2011, Jesse collaborated across artistic genres, working with Garrett Ammon, Artistic Director of the nationally acclaimed ballet company Ballet Nouveau Colorado (BNC), in their production of Rarities and Oddities. This project, entitled Vagabond Hill, featured songs from Jesse’s debut album Devil’s Red.

Devil’s Red was released in April 2011 and has received energetic praise from local, national, and international critics. Devil’s Red was featured on Epitonic and is continuing to garner attention months after its release.  In February 2012, Jesse collaborated again with BNC in their production of Love in the Digital Age. This project featured Jesse’s a capella version of the traditional folk song Fair and Tender Ladies. Jesse completed his new EP, A Path through the Dark, in November 2012 collaborating with many of Denver’s most talented musicians and artists; and will be releasing the EP on March 2, 2013.
