Do You Know Sean Hayes?

My brother Sean and I were born sixteen months apart and were separated less than a year later when he was put up for adoption. I didn’t remember this, but I grew up always feeling like something was “missing.”

When I was eight, my grandparents finally revealed to me that I had a brother — and suddenly everything made sense. I was shown a picture and told that he played piano. As I grew up and began to discover music myself, I often fantasized about starting a band and making music with my brother.

One day, while sitting with my guitar, a song poured out of me — a culmination of all my feelings surrounding the entire situation. With a very early and shaky version of my voice, I recorded a few live takes of it for my first full-length album, Kill The Word. “Do You Know Sean Hayes” revealed a deep longing and became the catalyst for finding and eventually reuniting with my brother.

That day felt like a miracle.

Getting to know Sean was a true gift. We made up for lost time by doing all the things we were deprived of in our childhood. Our time together was filled with roller coasters, skiing, hiking, horror movies, and haunted houses. I can’t recall one time I fought with my brother, we were always laughing and joking instead. He had the best laugh.

I loved my brother before I met him — and somehow, I loved him even more when we became friends. I was so happy to have my brother back.

One year ago today, Sean passed away after suffering a major brain stem stroke. For a second time, my whole world changed.

Sean Hayes was a good man — kind-hearted, with a deep appreciation for nature and a passion for growing plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. The only thing he loved more than horticulture was sharing his knowledge and inspiring others to feel the same joy.

I find a lot of tranquility in knowing that Sean saved four lives, gave the gift of sight to someone, and affected countless others by being an organ donor. I know that would make him smile in that way we all knew and adored.

Though Sean never stuck with making music himself, he was a true lover and fan of all genres. We loved going to concerts together, and that passion for music connected us deeply. Revisiting the song I wrote for Sean as a teenager has brought me immense healing — and has also given me the opportunity to present it the way it deserves. As our bond deepened over the years, so did my understanding of music, my voice, and life itself.

Reuniting with Sean healed me in unimaginable ways — and reuniting with this song has evolved that healing even further. It feels like things have come full circle.

The only thing that hurt more than losing my brother was losing him a second time.
The same might be said for the depth of healing.

I wish I could say more. I wish I had some ultimate conclusion about grief, or some comforting cliché about appreciating life — but I don’t.

All I have to offer is this song.
I hope it can serve in all the ways I cannot.

All I know is that it has for me.
