Requiem

From Lois: The mountain dulcimer can have a silky tone and mellowness that first made me love it.  Here’s a medley that uses that voice, from my “Dulcimer Enchantment” CD,  "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes” was a popular melody before English playwright Ben Johnson wrote its words (called ’To Celia’) in 1616 .  The latter tune, “Give Me Your Hand," was composed around 1603 by blind Derry, Ireland harpist Ruaidri Dáll Ó Catháin. He wrote it as a gesture of reconciliation for the Scottish Lady Ellington. Lois Hornbostel, fingerpicked acoustic mountain dulcimer; Jerry Rockwell, guitar; Janet Furman, harp.

Simplicity, warmth, authenticity... these are among the musical values that the mountain dulcimer embodies. 

The mountain dulcimer is a uniquely American instrument that lends itself well to acoustic genres including folk music, traditional hymns, and international/world music. It is a bridge between the Old World and the New, the ancient and the modern, and my musical repertoire (both instrumental and vocal) reflects such fusions.

My dulcimers are heralds of quiet joy, healing, and life well lived.
