A major star in her native land, via her successful acting and music careers, Argentina’s Juana Molina should be a household name in the rest of the world. In April 2017 she released her seventh album, Halo, and will be touring the world in support. Online Publisher Geoff Stanfield caught up with Juana to discuss the making of her new album, her process, and the path that has led her to this point. Enjoy!

Sylvia Massy made a good name for herself as a producer and engineer making records with artists like Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skunk Anansie, Love & Rockets, R.E.M., Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, System of a Down, Smashing Pumpkins, Prince and my favorite, Big Elf.  She recently published "Recording Unhinged" a collection of left of center recording techniques and ideas accompanied by her artwork. Sylvia recently moved her studio operation from Weed, California to Ashland, Oregon which is where she took some time out from her schedule to chat with online publisher Geoff Stanfield. Enjoy!

Episode 11: Sylvia Massy

Not only is Susan Rogers a record producer, engineer, mixer, and audio electronics technician, she has a doctorate in psychology (having studied music cognition and psychoacoustics) from McGill University. As an engineer Susan really got her start working with Prince from 1983 to 1988, including albums like Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, Parade, Sign o' the Times, and The Black Album. Her other studio sessions have included artists like Barenaked Ladies, David Byrne, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Rusted Root, Tricky, Geggy Tah, and Michael Penn. She is currently the director of the Berklee College of Music's Perception and Cognition Laboratory, and is an associate professor at Berklee. Portions of this interview were conducted after a listen to a vinyl LP of Purple Rain in front of a live audience during the "Saturday Night Listening Party" at the Welcome to 1979 Recording Summit (held every November in Nashville), and the rest of the interview took place between Susan and me the following day. نلتقي في هذه الحلقة بثلاثة ضيوف من «بلاتنم»، شركة إنتاج موسيقي (record label) من فلسطين: الناظر (محمد مسروجي)، وهو المنتج الموسيقي، شب جديد (عدي عباس)، الكاتب والمؤدي الرئيسي، وشب موري (أحمد زغموري)، الذي يلعب عددًا من الأدوار في الشركة، أحدها دوره كمخرج إبداعي (art director). 
 
تأسست «بلاتنم» عام 2015، وأصدرت أغنيتها الأولى عام 2017. وفي 2019، أطلقت الشركة «سندباد الورد»، أول ألبوم كامل لشب جديد، من إنتاج الناظر. 

في فترة زمنية قصيرة، تمكنت «بلاتنم» من بناء اسم وقاعدة جماهيرية واسعة، حتى صارت من الأسماء الأساسية على ساحة التراب والهيب هوب في العالم العربي. 
 
هنا، يحدثنا مؤسسو الشركة عن عملية صناعة ألبومهم الأول، وعن حياتهم قبل «بلاتنم» وكيفية تأسيسها، وكذلك عن تقييمهم لتجربتهم في العمل كمجموعة. كما نحلل معًا أغنية «بنساك» لشب جديد ومقاطعة.

Katalog is a podcast by Mada Masr, about the process, production, and deeper meaning behind select works from the contemporary Arab and North African music landscape. Co-produced and hosted by music journalist/writer Maha ElNabawi and musician/sound engineer Adham Zidan, the podcast offers behind-the-scenes stories of musicians, their inspiration, and their process through a dynamic sonic experience.

In each episode, we feature a guest musician, and together we break down their tracks to give our listener a more intimate understanding of the complex layers that make up their unique sound.

This episode of Katalog is special because of instead of having only one guest, today we have three. From BLTNM, we have Al Nather or Mohamed Masrouji, Shabjdeed / Ady Abbas, Ahmad Zaghmouri (Shabmouri).

BLTNM is a music production company and record label from Palestine. Al Nather is  the producer, Shabjdeed is the head writer, and MC, while Shabmouri plays a number of roles, including art director. 

Even for those who haven’t heard of BLTNM, but follow trap or hip hop, have likely come across songs within their catalogue. BLTNM was founded in 2015, and released its first song in 2017. Within a short time, BLTNM was able to build a massive, youth-driven fan base across the region, until it became one of the main names associated with the hip hop and trap scene in the Arab world. After they released a bundle of tracks online through a strategic plan distribution plan, they dropped 2019 “Sindibad” produced by Al Nather, with lyrics written and rapped by Shabjdeed.  

We sat down with the founders and artists behind BLTNM after their party in Cairo in 2019. In the episode they tell us about the process of making their first album, about their life before BLTNM and about how the company was established. We also break apart their hit track, “Bansak” together, and end the episode hearing about their work dynamic as a group, and how they develop standards for assessing and progressing their work.
