Jessica Baldwin is a popular musics voice specialist, creativity coach, and indie soul singer-songwriter.  After completing her master's in classical vocal pedagogy and performance, she started her personal artistry walkabout after a teacher led her to The Artist's Way. She also devoured whatever she could find about CCM vocal pedagogy, attended her first CCM Institute in 2009, and was eventually appointed to the faculty of the Institute in 2016. While she still loves nerding out on vocal pedagogy and helping singers create the sounds they want, her true passion is in helping singer-artists connect to the why behind their sounds, songs, and style, walking alongside them as they find their own path to artistic authenticity.

El Scorcho is my favorite track from my favorite Weezer album: Pinkerton. My good friend and uber-amazing singer-songwriter Jared Mahone agreed to help a fun cover of it come to life. 

Much about the track is an homage to Weezer and the original album. Under the iconic guitar solo, the rest of the band plays another iconic Weezer guitar solo from "Beverly Hills" (good call, Jeff Martin!). There are also a couple of references to "Madame Butterfly," the opera whose character Pinkerton was Cuomo's inspiration for the album title. (Cuomo supposedly felt somewhat like Pinkerton during the Blue Album tour.) After the basic tracks had been recorded and it was time to add some icing to the cake, Jared had a dream where he heard samples from the opera worked into the tune. He promptly woke up, ordered an LP from eBay at 4AM, and made a literal dream come true. (Listen for the horns in the chorus and the buildup to the bridge.) Illustrator Leigh Cox Bond incorporated the opera reference into the album art, as well.

Jess Baldwin's music is a late night conversation in the corner booth of a speakeasy during that magical hour when most people have gone home and taken their small talk with them. Her performances feel ethereal, luscious, delightful, comforting, and healing, featuring jess’ poetic lyrics, lush harmonies, playful rhythms, and butterscotch vocals weaving into dreamy jazz and indie soul tunes. Her originals are reminiscent of Becca Stevens, Laura Mvula, Gretchen Parlato, and Sufjan Stevens, and her fresh takes on her favorite artists incorporate flavors of wonder and joy. Jess found her vocal style and writing voice after leaving the classical training and religious upbringing of her youth. She and many generations of her ancestors hail from the Central Appalachian Mountains.

Jess appeared on American Public Television’s Songs at the Center in 2018, NPR's Mountain Stage in 2013, was a quarterfinalist in the 2015 and 2017 American Traditions Competition, and won Best Cover Song in the 2015 and 2017 Ohio Music Awards.
