Todos me miraban y sonreían. Viejas con las tetas largas y caídas como plátanos maduros. Muchas de ellas desdentadas y fumando tabaco. Otras mambeando hojas de coca. Indias jóvenes bien formadas completamente desnudas se agrupaban con frecuencia a la puerta de la maloca y después de mantener una corta discusión desaparecían chasqueando la lengua y golpeándose las nalgas. Los niños tiraban piedrecillas al techo de la maloca y luego desaparecían haciendo ruidos de animales. El chamán cada atardecer venía y se sentaba a mi lado junto al fuego. Se fumaba un tabaco, le echaba leños a la hoguera, bailaba en diagonales, me miraba fijamente a los ojos y después desaparecía sin haber dicho una sola palabra. Hubo noches en que tuve todo el tiempo del mundo para repasar todos los nombres científicos que había memorizado y clasificado y estudiado, de las especies de hierbas y lianas y plantas con las cuales se preparaba la bebida o bebidas que me había llevado hasta la tribu. También guardaba en mi mente una larga lista bien detallada de sus componentes y formulas químicas. El término ayahuasca proviene del quechua y está formado por “aya” que significa “cuerpo muerto”, y por huasca que significa “cordel gordo” o “soga”;  la traducción mas acertada es “liana que permite ir al lugar de los muertos”.
