Holding on to perfection slows us down. 
If this helps any newcomers or old-timers to get their s#^t together and just put out their music, mixes or creatives and not wait for perfect, then im happy.

Another 1996 Mixtape from the 	archives. 
Had a listen to this and all I could think was how diverse the music was then. 

Diva vocals, pounding beats, piano riffs, cover versions of commercial tracks, quality, cheese, and those rare  tunes that you had heard somewhere and brought back those oh so good feeling from a dark corner of a dance floor somewhere. 

From clubs that were hard to get into unless you were the “right look”, to clubs that wouldn’t let you in if you were the “right look”. From under dressed tiny hot pants and bras to overdressed, anything worked if you could carry it off. All the way hrough to secret parties in derelict houses - how did we survive? 

I remember being in a 2 storey terrace house in the backstreets of Darlinghurst for a party that you had to call a number to find out where it was, there was a massive gaping hole in the upstairs floor that was the dance floor, god only knows how we avoiding falling through it. 

Music production varied from well produced pieces of pure magic to slapped together bootlegs - back then we called those white labels. 

All us DJ’s did everything we could to get our hands on the “limited edition” white labels as we knew or were told by our friendly vinyl pusher that its the LAST copy and there was only 50 copies released. Sometimes that was true… sometimes nah…. But you wouldn’t take the risk would you? 

The race was always who would play the next big tune first, back then there was no “hey dj can you play *Insert current top 10 track”. There was no waiting for someone else to turn it into a hit. 

Believe or not, I don’t hear vocals - I hear whats under the vocals and that for me is the journey, vocals get in the way of a good story! There is said it! 

Try to tell me or sing the vocals to something and I’ll most likely give you a blank look. 

The dance floor was served a selection of brand new tunes, new styles, experiments, vocals, instrumentals - yes the era when the best tunes had NO VOCALS - I was in my music heaven then! 

Back then people would follow certain DJ’s because they loved the particular style the DJ had, and the access to that music was limited to the DJ’s or avid music collectors as vinyl was expensive! Imagine paying anywhere from $15 and upwards for ONE tune? It was a bonus if both sides of the vinyl had winner tunes. 

Considering my pay rate was $35 per hour back then at my main gig (and then taxed) it meant either lots of gigs or day jobs just to sustain a healthy vinyl collection, let alone feed and support a child and myself. 

There was always a compromise, if you wanted the good gigs you were paid less as they were high profile and then you made up  the money for it on other side gigs. 

I will be releasing the Archived Mixtapes through the years that I was recording them. I still have a couple I could salvage from the collection for 1996. 1997. 1998. 1999. 

Some of the tapes didn’t survive, the quality is so bad that it was painful to hear. But, I’m glad that some have survived.  

As I listen to the tunes, they all bring memories of either buying them, playing them, trying to mix them and the worst was scratching them, ohhhh the pain of scratching a favourite tune! 

There are quite a few tunes I don’t have anymore, there’s another story there. Some I sold to fund my move to Melbourne, some were stolen - the stolen ones broke my heart as they were the cream of what I was playing in 1998 and 1999 and a lot of unique vinyl that was my sound and I have not found them again as I didn’t catalogue what I had so the artists and titles have been lost to me. 

Between the vinyl, flight cases, headphones, and a case of cds, it broke me. That happened on my birthday, I didn’t think I would recover.

June 1996 Mixtape. 
Dayclub Blackmarket. 
LOVED everything about Dayclub, the people - staff and punters, the venue, the energy, the grungieness and seediness. More than anything, I loved how everyone would look out for each other. 

Back then, you gave out demos (mixtapes) in the hope that someone would actually listen to it. Many times, the person that you wanted to hear it… didn’t.

Completely understandable, can you imagine how many demos they would get? Near impossible to listen to them all and make a fair judgement. 

…And I’m sure it became a chore being constantly pestered by up and coming talent… the words “did you listen to my demo” sounding like nails on a chalkboard after the 100th time that week.

March 1996: I was one of the resident DJ’s at Parramatta Leagues or better known as Kicks. My time there was 1993 to 1996, leaving not long after I was given the honour of a residency at Blackmarket. 

Dave Lewis was the manager at BM at that time. I had my usual Saturday night shift at Kicks, I was the “Dance music” DJ there. 

The Saturday night I ended up at Dayclub was a strange night. Two friends were having their 30th Birthdays at the Burdekin on Oxford St and they had asked if I could do a set for them. Being a Saturday night I was already at Kicks, but I said yes to the birthday gig anyway. 

So, I had a mystery case of food poisoning *cough* and left Kicks halfway through the night to get to the Burdekin for my 1am gig. 

A close friend had come with me, I was a little intimidated and really nervous for my first “city” gig even though it was a birthday party for friends. It makes it so much easier when there is someone there you know at times like that! 

Those were the days when there were random bomb threats, and one happened at the Burdekin when I was three tracks in. The night was shut down. 

Seeing as I was already in the city, I did a drive by Dayclub to see if they might be open. 

Now, I wasn’t thinking of just going to Dayclub to have a bit of a night out… I was going to confront Dave the manager  if he had listened to my demo yet. He said no 😳

To this day, I have no idea what possessed me to do that. 

My mind went from, ok Im in the city, the gig I was at was shut down, Ive got nothing to lose if I ask. At worst I get told to get lost, at best I make an impression and my name might be remembered and he might listen to the demo, and I had new ones I could give him as well. 

Well, that conversation went in a way I didn’t expect. 

After asking Dave if he had listened to the demo and being told no, and explaining what my night had entailed to that point, somehow the conversation turned to yes I have music in my car and I think I said “while I’m here, do you want to hear me play“ as they weren’t open yet. Maybe my memory is a little vague and Dave suggested it…. Maybe Dave can shed some light if he remembers. 

What was I thinking? Dave said yes. F#@k I thought I was going to vomit. My palms instantly got sweaty, yes I get sweaty palms before gigs. 

They were still setting up for Dayclub so they had no music on. It was all a bit surreal, I went and got my music and my friend out of the car, we lugged the cases full of vinyl up those back stairs, the sound system was turned on. 

Standing there looking over the decks, over the railing that enclosed the dance floor, seeing the lighting and those cages, was a frozen moment in time for me and I can still feel the goosebumps of that very first time playing at Blackmarket. For me it was the epitome of being a DJ. 

That was the best moment in my DJ career. There was no other moment than right now. No thought of what happens after the set, no expectation of getting further work, just pure concentration so I didn’t f#@k up a mix. 

Dave let me play for a few hours, and I was in DJ heaven! When I finished Dave asked me to come back and play when they were open. I had just landed my first city DJ residency.

Traditionally January every year there was NO new music to buy. Distributors were closed, and vinyl shipments stopped.

So some of us DJ’s had to search through our collections to find those gems that we had either forgotten about, or flipped the b-side and found an even better version/remix of a tune than was the main release. 

Not sure if that was due to a vinyl addiction and the constant hunt for something fresh, FOMO or we were just shopaholics. 

1997 was the year I had everything I had wanted for my DJ career, club gigs and regular work. I was loving the change in the music genres as they were developing … or was it that my mind was just starting to open up even more? 

Music had no boundaries, the dance floor was as open to music as to the level of expertise of the DJ. 

A good DJ played a lot of “hits” as they were easy floor fillers and got a reaction, which hits was dependent on the scene and the club in question. 

A great DJ made hits. Never afraid to push boundaries or to introduce a new sound. Crafted well into a set that filled a dance floor with trust and also entertained. Keeping a floor not playing hits was a true craft. 

Trance was on its way and in a big way. The challenge to introduce this sound was accepted! The best way I could think of to get the sound out was via the mixtapes, and 1997 was when this started happening. 

The mixtapes from 1997 will reflect a new tune being dropped in the mix to break the tune in so to speak, ok… it was more like break the punters in to a new tune. Some of these these were so different to what the normal flow was, it was almost a snap out of it moment. 

Listening back to some of the mixtapes, my naming of the sound that I loved at the time as “gangster house” is quite fitting. Arse shaking fat base on a big system, male raps and vocals made my arse wiggle while in the mix. 

Over the previous year I had built up a loyal following that would buy these mixtapes, so they were the ones to hear the new music coming through. The tapes were released as soon as I could after buying the music and I’d already be playing the tunes as I was buying them. Why wait? 

How I remember some of the reactions to some of the new sounds coming …. some were phenomenal eruptions of peaking human sound effects, some were an excuse for a quick drink at the bar or a toilet break. 

OMG and speaking of toilet break…. Being a female and playing really long sets of up to 8hrs+ you can only hold on for so long, and then add in that menstrual cycle…. 

Well it wasn’t feasible to use a bottle or cup (so much easier for the blokes right?) so I had to find tracks long enough so that I could run to the toilets trough a packed dance floor, up a set of stairs and do what I had to do and get back in time to get the next track in. Im lucky I never had gastro….  

Those of you that knew DCM and the female toilets, they were up a set of stairs and there was ALWAYS a queue. The staff had one toilet at the top of those stairs. 

The desperation if the staff toilet was occupied and the pleading with whoever was at the head of the punters toilet queue to let me go next or there would be no music was almost funny had I not been worried that would actually happen! 

Then the run back through the dance floor, crawl into the DJ booth and get the next tune in on time. Im sure people thought I was rude rushing past ….

Almost at the end of the 20th Century. Wow 
The end of the 90’s decade… even more WOW. 

What a decade it was. 
Music, Fashion, Phones, Internet, Computers…. Technology,…. We had so many changes, and so much to adapt to. 
Bit of a quick smack in the face to realise that you either got on with it, or you got left behind. 


Music changed SOOO much in that decade. 
Going through mixtapes just from 1996-1999 and hearing it now, after all these years showed such a significant difference in the sounds, the technology, the production and the structure of “electronic” music. 

Was it also a sign of the recreational party favourites of any given season? YES. 
Thats a BIG YES. 

Watching or studying a dance floor prior to any set was a must for me. To feel out what the flavour of the night was, and the energy of the room.

Had the previous DJ worked the floor in a good way was always at front of mind. 
Did they “burn’ you by playing all the hits one after another and leave you with nothing in case you needed a “crowdpleaser”? 

Was the dance floor burnt out way too early? 
Or was it rocking and so perfectly primed you could close your eyes and feel the room? 

Could I just pull out anything of my collection and know it would elevate? Or did I have to carefully rework the room to change it? 

All those thoughts would cross my mind in less than a minute to asses my tactic. 

Understanding all the above really quickly, was the key to a great gig and a brilliant night out for everyone. I didn’t plan a set from start to finish, how could I? I didn’t know what went on before I arrived so I “winged” it. Took enough music with me so that I could go in several different directions if needed. 
To be honest, nearly every set I did not know what my first track would be until I turned up in the Dj booth.
