I had the great pleasure of working with the legendary Phife Dawg back in 2002. He came to Orlando for a few days and although we spent more time at my crib playing NBA2K than we did in the studio, he still managed to quickly grasp the bond between Hip Hop and Drum and Bass music in a way only he could. 

I wrote a groove for him that I wanted to have a little “Billie Jean” feel to it and gave him a list of key words to use. Because I would ultimately be going to England to rewrite the music with Danny Breaks, I included his name and his 2 labels (Droppin’ Science & Alphabet Zoo), along with my name and my crew (Planet Of The Drums), and he sat down for an hour or so with my groove running on a loop. 

He emerged with 4 pages of hand written lyrics (which I still have to this day) and let me know he was ready to go. We were at the old Trans-Continental studios where N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, and Brittany Spears had recorded, but I guarantee you that room had never held a vibe that thick prior to that day. 

Phife got in the booth, we took it from the top, and we did 4 consecutive takes which ultimately became the main verses and the layers of ad libs he meticulously sculpted with not even a single word of unusable material. The man was a pro, way beyond his time, and when he passed in 2016, the world lost one of the greatest icons in not just Hip Hop but all of Music History. 

I had my man Rick Simons from The Lab work a little magic on this very basic session mix and am leaving it here for the world to see how incredibly timeless Phife’s style and delivery were, and although my LP version hardly bares any resemblance of this original version, you see how dynamic Phife Dawg was with a pencil, some paper, and a microphone. 

Lastly, just in case anyone from ATCQ reads this, I know at that specific time this went down, you guys were beefing a bit and he was staying away from a lot of y’alls crew. BUT as you’ll hear in his lyrics, he still had mad love for all of you and never eluded to anything but love and respect.

RIP Phife Diggety and Thank You for blessing me with such an unforgettable time in my professional and personal life.
