Greetings music lovers! As a big fan of Cause & Effect (and all side projects by Rob Rowe), I've just completed an "Unofficial" remix of one of their singles titled 'The Speed of Light'. After attending Cause & Effect's recent show in San Antonio, I had the opportunity to catch up a little with Rob after his show and mentioned that I was interested in doing my own version of one of VH x RR's songs. I just completed this track tonight (Aug 8, 2023) after picking up from an idea I started several months ago this year. This is the first song I've written in 3 years (this month) and I'm quite pleased with the outcome. The finished version will be featured on my upcoming album. I still have a ways to go but I've decided that I will start focusing more time on the new release with hopes of completing it much sooner than anticipated. Subcon Remix 11 (James)

This is a remix I did for M&tF back in the late 90s that I never received credit for. I spent a LOT of time (6-8 hours a day for one month / track) and $$ (Replacing my computer monitor and studio monitors). I was given several DATs and also the original CD which I used SoundForge to make nearly a hundred edits per track. Though this is something that can easily be done with today's technology, it was quite a feat in the mid 90s.

A little info behind this track. The first 1.5 minutes of the song took me about a week to create (Splicing and editing the DAT version with the original CD version). Combination of learning how to use SF and also the creative aspect.

Hands That Hide (Dume Extended Remix)

This is another track that I wrote some time after the release. I believe this was written sometime back in 2006. Thoughts about this song.. It was based on what was going on in my life while I was with someone very special. It was a way for me to express myself during that part of my life with that someone. Unfortunately, I never really expressed this to them but use this more as an audio representation of what I was experiencing during that time.

02 - Through My Eyes

This track was written sometime in 1995. Pre Jihad material. I honestly cant remember much about writing this song. Not sure if anyone knew this, but my good friends in Germany (Pyrroline a.k.a Nordschlacht) released this song on their Nordschlacht album Silence, Beauty and Cruelty. The name they gave it was Causality Paradox and they added vocals. Upon meeting them many years ago online, they asked if they could release it on their album and I was very honored / thrilled about that.

This track was written sometime around 1995. Another track written after the album was released. I will more than likely revisit this track and add vocals. I really like the direction I was heading with this one. Especially the strings.

This is the first (Pre) Jihad track that was written before Rich and I officially started the band. I believe this was recorded about a year or so prior to Rich and I legitimately working on Jihad material. This particular track was (re)mixed by Gary Dassing of M&tF during the summer of 1991. He drove over to my folks house and brought his Roland 16-channel mixer and his Lexicon effect unit. I know I have another version with vocals on tape somewhere but cant locate it at the moment. I'll post it once I find it.

22 - Quantum Leap (M&tF Mix - Vox Incomplete)

This track was recorded sometime around the summer of 1994. This was the 1st of 2 tracks completed for the side project Trial By Fire (Part 2 of the demo The Execution of Witches). The flute intro was actually played by Jaime which we sampled & looped. Unfortunately, after we finished recording, I accidentally stepped on & broke it. :(

28 - Trial By Fire - To Catch The Devil

This was my first attempt of recording a live band while living at my parents house back in the early to mid 90s. :) Although the overall quality is a bit muddied / clipping on some parts, I feel pretty confident on the overall mix. You can definitely hear some influences here such as Slovdive & My Bloody Valentine which are really great bands. The band was called Red Velvet Venus and were friends with a guy I went to high school with (Todd Kreth - Guitar & vocals on Same Old Thing). A little side note about this track. The live drummer (Jamie) was unable to keep time while attempting to sequence the drums so I ended up programming them (Alesis HR-16).

Identity

1988 - 1996
The inception of Jihad began in 1988 by James Mendez, which is around the time Benestrophe was known locally in San Antonio, Texas, for their unique sound and eccentric performances. Through various experiences and exposure to Benestrophe (live performances and band rehearsals), the inspiration behind Jihad was conceived. Their style of music is comparable to Benestrophe in some ways, in that the compositions are comprised of a traditional verse-chorus structure. In addition, their music introduces various elements containing both electronic and sampled instruments with an overlay of dark / heavy vocals. During this same time period (1988 - 1993), James also collaborated in several side projects such as Fury & Fear with Robert Bustamante of Fektion Fekler, Primary Target (Releasing 'Chant Among Us' between 1989-1990, and recording 'The Churchyard Studio Sessions' in the studio of Benestrophe / Mentallo & The Fixer) and Trial by Fire (Releasing 'The Execution of Witches (Part 1)') with vocalist Jaime Chavez. Sometime after the disbandment of Benestrophe, Richard (ex-vocalist of Benestrophe) and James recorded a few songs, which one of them (Hands That Hide) ended up on the notorious RAS DVA Quadruple Compilation titled 'There Is No Time' released in July 1995. In addition, they also release three exclusive songs on the RAS DVA Fanbase Compilation titled Dora Blue in 1996.

1996 - 2009
Soon after, the Mendez duo were extended an offer to release a full-length album on RAS DVA. This was their debut album titled 'A Prayer in the Night' which was released in May 1997. In the same year, James also remixes False Prophets (Full Frontal Lobotomy Mix) and Mother of Harlots (Multi-National Brain Washer Re-mix) on the Mentallo & The Fixer CD single 'False Prophets'. Shortly after Jihad's first and only release, James decides to invest more time in his career for nearly ten years. Beginning in 2006 - 2008, James befriends other musicians in the dark electronic music scene (primarily in Germany) via social media. This leads to Jihad's first live performance in Trnava, Slovakia, with dear friends from Nordschlacht (aka Pyrroline) in May 2009. It is at this point, where the band consists of only James. Continuing on, he is introduced to Electro Aggression Records, establishing a fellowship among a network of musicians in the dark electronic music scene, spanning throughout various parts of the world (Europe, North and South America). Through this connection, James contributes a number of remixes for bands such as Object, Terminal State, Pyrroline, MC1R, kFactor, The Opposer Divine and several others.

2013 - 2019
Fast forward to 2013, a friendship with Martin Sane (Fïx8:Sëd8) develops where they recognize some common friends in the music scene they've unknowingly developed respectively over the years. Another two years pass and Jihad performs their second live performance at Dark EBM Souls in Bratislava, Slovakia, in February 2015. Later that year, Jihad releases a new live album in November 2015 titled 'Live in Bratislava 28.02.15 | Dark EBM Souls'. The outcome of Jihad's performance at this festival initiates their journey focusing on more live shows between 2015 - 2019 that extend throughout Europe, North and South America.

2020 - Present
As of 2020, it's been approximately twenty-three years since their debut album. Jihad has released a new album titled 'Retrospekt' in April 2020 and you can expect more live performances in 2023 / 2024 to help promote their latest release.
