The tuning is 17-note-per-octave equal temperament. This scale has very reasonable "perfect" fifths, but no usable major or minor third. The "neutral third" is used extensively. This piece uses a scale with 31 equal-tempered steps per octave. 31ET has very good triads and 7th chords, so it almost sounds like our familiar 12-note scale, only better.
