I sat down to write you a letter
had some things to get off of my chest
felt very strange messaging you haven't had contact in many years
like when I hear the word, Jessica
it's a strange thing to get my head around
went through all these things between 16 and for 4 years after that
and they're still somehow relevant to who I am and to those I keep around

Tried to reach you like someone might talk to someone at the end of their life
irrespective of context, temporary things and what we do think
and don't think is right
I had to level, so you know what you meant and mean to me
what I mean if I level with you is, just see it for what I say for I will no longer try
to add to you, to take from you
these things I will no longer seek to do
Never had an agenda, wouldn't try to hurt you

If it wasn't on that page I wouldn't want you to know it
and if it was then, Jess, take it down the line
keep it for some day just in case you need some words that will tell you something kind
I respect you have a partner
so do I and we recently got engaged
I started that letter saying ''I've been thinking about when your man will ask you to be his bride.''

And I guess what I meant is ''this is what I'm thinking, so if you've anything to say then say it now''

so it always felt like so much of who I am is rooted in somebody else
feels like this is my kind of crazy coming out
when I'm smoking weed or in the house by myself
It's because of how you were to me I was to you at that time
we were a tender age and love was so big that it was exploding from me with no hope to be keeping it in
I was soft
You were graceful and were wise in ways in which I was still naive
and you washed over me like a song I had expectations for the ending of
at the time felt I was being brushed aside
as I child always got my own way
you've got to remember: I'm a Mama's boy and my father's only Son
you were the first thing that went wrong

Stones II

Jim Blackmann was born in Liverpool but grew up in Canada, where he learnt the music of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. He returned to the UK and lived and worked in the North of England. He set off on a period of travel before finally settling in the South.

He is a writer, with two non-fiction books and a novel to his name, and wrote a great deal of poetry before turning to song-writing. His writer background shows in his lyricism. He plays guitar and piano and performs regularly in and around the Southwest of England.
