R. Murray Schafer: Requiems for the Party-Girl
Schafer depicts what surely must be a psychotic arc: a party girl’s downward spiral, ending in suicide.  A cross between Violetta Valéry and Miss Havisham, the character desires closeness, but the lack of tonality accurately portrays the denial of that yearning.  She is never saved.  Pilgrim’s voice leaps manically from one side of the staff to the other, maintaining a glamorous, warm tone that hides something more urgent, even sinister.  After her death, she continues to waft in and out, with ghostly echoes.
