Nordhalla – Laura Cannell Fiddle Solo improvisation

This piece was improvised and recorded in one take in Covehithe church in January 2016 in preparation for the Mythos of Violins collaboration on the Suffolk coast. Covehithe church is located on the top of a fast eroding cliff  just 250 metres from the shoreline and is a small parish church within the walls of the great medieval church of St Andrew which was ruined during the Civil War.
Covehithe was known in the Domesday book as Nordhalla and is said to be haunted by a white faceless lady dressed in a traditional shroud. I played this piece while thinking about the Mythos of Violins project and how landscape and location affect the sound and outcome. It’s only ever afterwards that the story of the piece emerges, but seems to make sense. By allowing the environment in, it feels as though the haunted nature (whether real or imagined) of the place always seems to emerge through the sound – especially in instant composition or improvised performance.
This is where a sense of folklore and experimentalism come together, for me it’s the unavoidable integration of sounds and surround(ings).

Irma Vep is a loner, a joker, a roamer, a ribald construct riddled with both earnest anxiety and mercurial songwriting talent birthed by a young Edwin Stevens in Llanfairfechan, North Wales. Having since fully grown into Irma Vep and now residing in Manchester, Stevens' discography has expanded to document every aspect of his music, from ecstatically free group experiments to bare, sparse songwriting that cuts to the quick, shorn of ornament or pretence. No Handshake Blues is a homage to Llanfairfechan (Transylfechan to the locals).

Having bedded down into Manchester's bourgeoning DIY scene, Stevens moonlights in several other groups (Sex Hands, Klaus Kinski, Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura, Yerba Mansa…), bringing with him an instantly recognisable guitar language. However it's in Irma Vep that his most life-affirming, troubling and thrilling music is made. Much Irma Vep feels like what "classic" music should feel like if it weren't so Classic. Each record, each song and each performance exists as an evolving drama.

Edwin has toured the West Coast of America after being invited by Chris Johanson to play his Quiet Music Festival of Seattle and Portland. BBC 6 Music regularly spin his work. He tours the UK and Europe “butt loads”. Somehow he also finds time to run a tape label and put on gigs in Manchester under the ”Very Bon" moniker. Irma Vep performs solo, and also expands to a full band that includes Manchester legends DBH, Andrew Cheetham, Dave Rowe, Kiran Leonard and Dylan Hughes.

"I learned it from a performance by Martin Carthy on the Folk Britannia program, it took Ian and I a while to be able to play together ok, because the guitar and vocals interlocked so tightly and I needed the guitar as a scaffold, in a way. But now when we do it live, he just does some chords mainly to punctuate the beginning of a verse, but here I sing it unaccompanied and I'm comfortable with doing that now. It was one of the first traditional songs we found. It's basically a song about a woman bawling out the coppers in the middle of the street because they've got her man for a paltry crime of stealing from a rich man."

'Avocet Revisited'' is a four track EP, commissioned by Earth recordings as a companion piece to Bert Jansch’s 1979 avian-themed masterstroke ‘Avocet’. Again drawing inspiration from the resplendence of birds native to British waters (Bert himself was a keen ornithologist), Earth invited this quartet of artists to each choose a species that particularly speaks to them, and base a track around it. The results have been universally graceful, evocative, and majestic - much like the creatures themselves. 
 
Fulmar
Drifting low and gliding high, the flight patterns of this gull-like creature are echoed in Edwyn Collins and Carwyn Ellis’s paean to the bird that spends most of its life airborne. Part waltz, part lullaby, ‘Fulmar’ is exquisite in its simplicity, with Carwyn’s elegant arrangements providing the perfect foil for Edwyn’s unmistakeable intonation.
 
Curlew
The opening of Modern Studies’ track - the call of the Curlew itself - is as recognisable as the looping feathered frame of its namesake. Perfectly showcasing the handsome orchestral arrangements that have become the group’s signature style, there is a lightness of touch here that evokes Virginia Astley’s ‘From Gardens Where We Feel Secure’.
 
Goosander
Another Scottish resident, both artist and avian. Unmistakably Alasdair Roberts, ‘Goosander’ is at once refined and somewhat feral; Alasdair’s picking supplemented by sighing organ drones and spartan electric guitar. 
 
Golden Plover
Playing us out, Trembling Bells’ contribution has a Harvest feel - the last days of summer invoked by the warm refrain and gentle orchestration found on 'Golden Plover’. In another lifetime, this song - infused with the sounds of yesteryear - could very easily have made it onto the Wicker Man soundtrack… which should tell you all you need to know. A pagan hymn reimagined for the Scarfolk era! The band is joined by Callum Calderwood (violin), Rory Haye (vocals), Andrew Pattie (vocals) and Belle & Sebastian’s Stevie Jackson (12 string guitar).
